Question about Montana de Fuego

Hello! I've posted here before (we're leaving on August 17th). We haven't been able to change our reservation from Montana de Fuego to Tabacon. I want to be really mentally prepared- is Montana de Fuego really that bad?

Thanks in advance!

I've been really surprised by all the negative posts about montana de fuego. We stayed there 4 nights in Dec '03 and maybe things have really changed, but we had a wonderful stay. We had side by side jr suites. One for the kids. The grounds were lovely, great birding on site. The open air breakfasts were really good, the fresh fruits, pastries and coffee are still remembered fondly. The rooms were nothing fancy but clean and comfortable, a bit dark if you want to do reading in the evening, but we were so exhausted that we turned in pretty early after cocktails on our porch. We saw and heard lots of critters on the grounds. Howler monkey alarm clocks, armadillos scurrying around at night and birds galore. I hear that the lava flow has moved, but when we were there we had the perfect view right from our room. The one negative of our stay there was dinner in the restaurant. The service was painfully slow, although food was OK. After the first night we went into town for dinners. Maybe they're under new management now, does anyone else have info? It's not "upscale" or luxury if that's what you're after, maybe that explains the negative reviews of late. Just my two cents, Ruth in Maine.

I stayed at Montana de Fuego last March and I loved it. The grounds are beautiful and the staff is wonderful.

I agree that it is best to eat dinner in La Fortuna and not at the hotel.

Is it really that bad? I posted a very poor review- we had a bad experance there and I would not stay there again. HOWEVER, in the scheme of life it is not that bad. Just the worst of the places we stayed.
I advise to book tours elesewhere- I really did not like the tour guy or the help in general- but the grounds were nice the view outstanding, and I think the suites ( we did not have one) are much nicer.
Relax- have fun,it is only a room!

We have two of their suite rooms- not the regular rooms and our tours are already booked (we're traveling with a guide/tour company). I was just concerned. I heard a lot of bad things about the regular rooms so I was worried that the suites would be the same.
