Going to Ixtapa & Zihue mid July

My message Things to do? Things to avoid? All adults who love the water and adventure. And of course some relaxation time.

Thanks.

There's only a poster or two who know Zihuatanejo on this forum, unfortunately. Hopefully Stewbear will stop by soon.

Do not wish to discourage you but it is hot. The big problem is very humid so AC is a must. Huge crowds of Mexican Nationals so lots of activities on the main square especially on Sunday evenings.
Unfortunately with summer rains (may or may not be heavy) the water quality in Zihua is poor due to run off from hill side pollution.
I personally would restrict my swimming to pool, the open water in Ixtapa or better yet, Barra de Potosi out past the airport. Lovely beach town with a great lagoon for kayaking brimming with wildlife, a very swimable beach & a half a dozen excellent fresh seafood restaurants on the beach.
Some of the "gringo" cafes will be closed but most open.
Another great day trip is Troncones. Great surfing but only for better swimmers due to rip tides. Still a lovely beach with some excellent cafes.
Overnight trips include Patzcuaro at 9,000' much cooler & a great place for arts/crafts at low prices. Set on a large lake with a number of villages around it each with their own craft makes it ideal along with the city it's self one of my favorites. Nice architecture, 2 lovely plazas for relaxing/people watching & even a coffee shop with real NY cheese cake.

Thank you Stewbear and Suze. What are warning signs re water pollution? I am guessing you are talking about the bay itself.

Troncones was on the list of places to go. Thanks for the Barra de Potosi lead.

What is best way to get around? Should we rent a car, taxi?

What to do and/or avoid in Ixtapa? I know it is a large resort town and can expect to see many other tourists.

And, lastly, any fishing tips? Any "panga" operators to look for and/or avoid?

Thank you!

I would never rent a car in Mexico myself. It's easy enough to get around (in towns like these) on foot, by bus, using taxis, shuttles or even a private driver.

I have friends there with cars plus cabs cheap. You can hire a cab/driver for around 400 pesos for a day (6 hours) at Potosi or Troncones. Buy him lunch of course. Also some will a do overnights at reasonable prices. Also lots of buses. Ixtapa is not really very large in fact small by Mexican standards.
As far as fishing tips go to Zihuatanejo Trip Adviser & post a request from labrat(IE Keith) who is the local fishing expert as far as guides go.
NEVER book with the "coyotes" on the beach!
