Yorkshire Dales
Off to the UK with my sister in a couple of weeks. We will be staying with family in County Durham and thought of hiring a car and heading to the Yorkshire Dales.
Can anyone out there suggest a nice town to stay - they all look so pretty.

Hi there
Yes, it is very pretty, and I am lucky enough to live there! A car is pretty much essential as you say.
I really love the village of Pateley Bridge in Nidderdale. It's like a small town really, has everything you need, and is surrounded by the most beautiful hills. It has an old-fashioned atmosphere (it even has a bandstand in the park). This time of year with the leaves turning golden it looks great, and there are footpaths everywhere from the town to the gorgeous countryside. Some fantastic pubs and restaurants within easy reach as well!
Grassington is another possibility - this is a more touristy place but you are going slightly out of season so that shouldn't be a problem.
Happy to help further if you have more questions.

Morgana,
When I was little my parents used to drive us out to Brimham Rocks and after a long game of hide-n-seek we would travel onto Pateley Bridge for the best fish & chips.
It it still there - if I remember rightly (this is more years than I care to remember it was on a corner near a car park?

I can highly recommend a B&B called "The Granary" in Stearsby (north of York, about 20 minutes or so).
Their website is: www.thegranary-stearsby.com
It is a wonderful place - the hosts are more than welcoming; they really go the extra mile! Their home and the B&B rooms are beautiful. The food is delicious. It's quiet and secluded, but very close to York, Fountains Abbey, Castle Howard, etc.
It's simply one of the best B&B's we've ever stayed in.

Just a suggestion, but an accessible alternative (from Durham) to the Yorkshire Dales is the North York Moors.
I would stay at Pickering, a nice village that puts you right between York City (via Castle Howard) and Whitby on the coast (via Goathland, Glaisdale and Grosmont).
The placenames bracketed may involve short detours - but I mentioned them because they're worth it.
Cheers

Thanks so much - info like this makes deciding so much easier.
Thanks 'twoflower' for your suggestion. I really would like to go to Whitby as being an Aussie I would like to see where Captain Cook came from. Maybe we can do the Moors and go across to the Dales for a few days.
