We'll be first time cruisers (7 Seas Voyager) and first time visitors to Copenhagan and Stockholm pre and post cruise. We'll probably stay 2 nights in each city. We'd like to find a hotel that's not more than $300 per night. Main priority is QUIET. Also hope to have fine, spacious room, with good view. I've read that accommodations in Scandinavia are very expensive. Is it possible to find a great hotel in those 2 cities for under $300? Since we'll be embarking/disembarking, I suppose someplace not far from the cruise harbor would be good-- unless there are more handsome areas to stay. Many thanks!

My wife and I found the Hotel Gamla Stan in Stockholm to be immaculate, friendly, well-located in the old quarter, quiet, good breakfast included,, and a large room on the top floor with access to a roof garden. I suppose they have a web site.

I agree with USNR. I stayed at the Hotel Gamla Stan in 1998, and they have the second best breakfast buffet(after the Holiday Inn in Liege) that I've found in Europe. And while I was attending a conference where my room was covered, I'd guess that the rate is well under $300 a night. The only drawback is the view. Mine was of an office next door. Street-front rooms, however, have a pleasant enough view.

poss: I agree with USNR and joe. The Gamla Stan in Stockholm is a very nice 3*, well under $300. We had a top floor room with access to the roof garden as well. It was very quiet. Staff is very helpful and pleasant.
In Copenhagen, try the Danmark. Again, go for the top floor and to the rear of the hotel which is quiet and offerd a great view over the roof tops of the old town. Once more, the staff is pleasant and friendly.
Both hotels are very well located either in the old town (Gamla Stan)or on the edge. Both are well under $300. The rooms are not huge, but not small either and they are very nicely decorated. Have a great trip.

Here is a third "definite---yes" for the Gamla Stan.

The two previous reviews are right on, and I second the "best breakfast" award for this hotel. (I think I would go back again just to have some of their amazing breakfast crepes!!)

If you consider this hotel, ask for a room on the top floor. They gave us the "honeymoon suite", and the price was quite reasonable. The small rooftop, terrace (on that floor) has views of the Cathedral belltower.

The Gamla Stan, which is nestled in the heart of the Old Town, is also convenient to the subway for moving to other areas around the city, and to the rail terminal for trains to the airport. In a two block walk, you are at the Royal Palace, and another block takes you to the boat dock for a ride to the center of the "new town" or to the "Skansen"---a must see while in Stockholm.

We stayed at the Elizabeth Hotel(also in the Old Town) for one night, and then moved right back to the Gamla Stan. (The Elizabeth was almost twice as expensive, and we had a room the size of a large closet.)

I stayed at the Hotel Diplomat - a beautiful art deco building which should be within your budget although rooms with view could be at the top end. If you like the funky Basil Street Hotel in London, you will like the Diplomat

I just came back from a trip to Scandinavia, the Baltics and Russia. I stayed 6 nights at the Hotel Gamla Stan in Stockholm. The location was excellent, within walking distance to most everything. The breakfast was also very good, although I think the room was too dark. As for large spacious rooms, not only did we not get a large room, but there was hardly any room for clothing. The bathroom was only adequate. In fact, if you wanted to blow-dry your hair you ran the risk of strangling yourself with the hose that was attached to the wall!!!
But, that being said, I did like the hotel. The staff was helpful.
We got a Stockholm Card that enabled us to visit the museums for free and hop on and off the bus. It also included free boad sightseeing. Definitely worth the $.

I stayed at the Grand Hotel and loved it. It is very nice and in a good location. They have special rates, surely under 300 a night. I know we paid less than 300 a night there.

We recently stayed at the First Hotel Reisen in Gamla Stan. We had 2 different rooms - one on the 2nd floor with huge picture windows overlooking the canal, and the other on the top floor with a balcony. Both rooms were large and comfortable. The breakfasts were quite good, and the staff were great. I'd highly recommend it.

Hi living in Stockholm i must say that if you can get a deal a the Grand Hotel go for it! its the most classy and elegant hotel in town. try hotels.com or priceline to get a good deal good luck. While you are ther dont miss their smorgasbord excellent but no hamburgers

I just got back from Stickholm, and stayed at the Hilton Slussen. What a lovely hotel! All wood, with sleek, smooth surfaces, interesting inlay and design, and a great all marble bathroom. Our room looked out across the canal towards Gamla Stan, so got a fabulous view. 1 Block from a subway stop, and a couple of min walk to touristy Gamla Stan. The breakfast was an incredible buffet, with lots of fresh fruit, still warm breads, cheeses and smoked salmon, cols cuts, fersh squeezed juice, and the usual eggs/potatoes/sausages. The staff was helpful and kind. We really loved this hotel, and I am usually no fan of staying in a chain hotel, especially overseas.
