Where to Stay in Bavaria ..family of 5
Hi All:
We will be going to Germany this Spring (end of May/Early June) and am looking to set up a "base camp" for 6 days somewhere near Fussen/Mittenwald.
Any suggestions for kid friendly accomodations?
BavarianBen is getting me really interested in staying on a farm.
Many Thanks in advance,
Doug

Having worked in Bavaria for nearly a year as a civilian I can tell you that anywhere is a great place. Personally I like the Chimsee area and Munich. Have fun and study up on a few basic German words and numbers. And Never address a woman as Florilin! Its like saying hey little girl.

I think Jor probably meant Fraulein. Also, in Bavaria you will often hear "Gruss Gott" as a greeting rather than the "good day/good evening" heard in other parts of France--Bavaria is strongly Roman Catholic.

I'm fond of the town of Diessen. It's a small town on the west side of Ammersee lake with a nice beach and several sights, centrally-located for journies by car or by train into the alpine destinations you mention, or into Munich, or north to Landsberg. A ferry connects Diessen to Herrsching on the other side of the lake - a good tip if you want to hike up to Andechs Monastery, a favorite little pilgrimage of many Germans, to enjoy the bountiful and inexpensive German food and beer there while surveying the Alps (on a clear day.)
You can see a list (some with links) of rentals in the area at the following page ("Ferienwohnung" is the word for rental, "Betten" tells you how many people each place accommodates.) There is a link at the bottom to the local tourist office for assistance with finding a place.

You can also go to the homepage and click on the various links to get some views of the place. Click on guestinfo on the left for some photos and pages in English.

We spent a week in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, partly because we found a great deal on an apartment. We loved the town -- lots to do there and a great base for day trips in various directions.
www.drawbridgetoeurope.com has a whole bunch of apartments available, and are reasonable.
