Beware overcharging at Munich Hofbrauhaus

The Munich Hofbrauhaus is a great place to drink and eat while in Munich. We did enjoy our visit. However, beware that at least for our group of 7 we were overcharged $30.

The waiter showed us our total on his notebook, no itemization provided. He did not provide a bill for us to examine, only a sheet in his notebook with the total written out. Since we had ordered drinks, dinner and dessert, we didn't question it. Later after we had left when we tried to split up the total among ourselves we realized the overcharge.

We consulted the concierge at our hotel, who recommended returning to speak with the manager. We did return and immediately ran into our waiter who asked if anything was wrong. He denied there was a manager on duty (other waiters said there was a manager on duty) and agreed to give back the $30. We didn't push the issue of the discrepancy as we couldn't prove for sure that he deliberately overcharged us.

So...the lesson here is to be sure to ask for an itemized bill before paying at the Munich Hofbrauhaus. Dee,

Stay away from the Hofbrauhaus. Next time go to the Augustiner Keller beergarden near the main train station. Great place, and the best beer in town, in my opinion.

Mike,

You are correct.

When I worked for Siemens, we were in Munich for a conference and we went there for dinner and beer and it was great. It is where the locals go for beer. The beer is excellent and we sat outside under the trees till midnight drinking Augustinerbrau.

A great place and a great evening!

You might also try the Seehaus at the Englisher Gartens as well.

US

The overcharging can occur anywhere. I was overcharged recently in the US. Just check your bill as there are bad eggs in any business. Don't hold one dud waiter against all of the Hofbrauhaus. We have been there a few times and always had good service and fair treatment. This post should serve as notice to all for all restaurants, not just one.

Bob,

I agree as well. I have been to the HBH a couple of times. It is very touristy and I to have been overcharged. Even had a waiter tell me that Salzburg is part of Germany and if I disagreed then I did not know Germany.

I figured this young man was a leftover Nazi and left well enough alone.

But for locals, less touristy real German beer hall then Ausgustiner is the place.

US

PS

Visit the Hofbrauhaus during the day and buy your mug and tee shirt then go to Augustiner for drinking in the evening.
