What to eat and where to eat in Crete?

Im visiting Crete for the first time in Sept and would love to try authentic Cretan food. Does anyone know what kind of food this is and also any recommendations for good places to eat or are the towns of Crete mainly catered for lovers of "Steak and Chips". Im probably going to stay in the Rethymnon area but have a car to travel.

thanks in advance.

The main towns of Crete are not just resorts for foreign tourists. Iraklion is a big city, the fifth biggest in Greece, and Khania and Rethimnon are also big Greek cities. The whole island has a substantial agricultural industry and would be prosperous even without tourism. Get a comprehensive guide book, such as the Rough Guide, and it should answer your questions.

There's a wonderful little inexpensive tavern in the village of Megala Chorafia, which is maybe 20 min. from Chania. It's the only show in town, so no problem finding it, once you get to MC, which is up in the hills overlooking Souda Bay.

Visit Vamos, a "heritage village" between Hania and Rethymnon. From where I live there are even special "foodie trips" to Vamos, just to learn to cook traditional Cretan food in local people's kitchens. Those trips are popular.

I went to Vamos just to have lunch, and yes, it was really good. Check the following site, there you see an article about Vamos, and there is also a link to traditional food. Here:

Crete has some of the best Greek food I've ever had!! Man oh man. They have excellent olive oil and red wine. I'll try to look up the places we ate last year, that we're still dreaming of!

Sheila!! Are you out there?!

I'm here, P.

Most tavernas will do real Cretan food at one level or another, so long as keep away from the ones with colour photos of their steaks. The food is typically Greek.

Personally, I'd stay away from Dakos, and try lots of Briam.

My trip reports are all on here. Email me and I'll copy them to you, and have a look at www.explorecrete.com
