We flew back from Geneva on our last trip to Switzerland. The airport has some nice duty free shops. There are a few eateries, we chose to lunch at the small but very good restaurant which is tucked away next to the buffet area. Had a nice bottle of wine and excellent food. For Swiss prices, not too bad.

Hi Jan. With only a couple of hours, I'd probably catch a bus or train (or cab, if you're feeling flush - Geneva cabs are pretty pricey) to the lakefront, and just wander a bit. Geneva is not loaded with must-see sights (although the Red Cross Museum is absolutely worth a special visit, if you're so inclined), but it has a really pleasant atmosphere. If you head for the lake near the Pont du Mont Blanc, you can wander the promenade, see the Jet d'Eau (and, if the weather cooperates, lovely Mont Blanc looming in the distance), visit the wildly overrated Flower Clock, maybe stroll the Jardin Anglais or a bit of Old Town. I'd saw a nice walk and maybe a glass of wine in one of the little cafes fronting the lake or the Rhone would beat hanging around the airport hands down.

Do you truly have 3-1/2 hours extra or does that include time you'll need to be back at the airport to check in for your continuation flight?
The train station is connected to the airport and the downtown Geneva stop is only 7 mins away, trains run literally all the time.
That said, I'd probably just cozy up at the airport and drink some nice Swiss wine or have an espresso or something and read those guidebooks (especially if you're coming off a transatlantic flight).

I'd do as kenman suggested. The train from the airport is quick and easy, especially if you don't have luggage. from the train station you can walk down to the waterfront area, past all the shops and businesses. I really enjoyed my afternoon just strolling along and stopping for a nice glass of wine to enjoy with the scenery.
