what can we do with a 3 1/2 hr layover in geneva?

My husband and I have a 3 1/2 hour layover in Geneva. Is that enough time to grab a cab and do a little sight-seeing?

Have you factored in going through customs and passports, etc.etc.

It's slower nowadays going through all that at the airport.

Assuming you get through immigration and customs in good time, you can easily take the train into Geneva, it is about 15 minutes to the main train station from the airport train station. (A cab would run you about $65 dollars, welcome to Switzerland). You can walk a block or so to the lake and also walk around the old town depending on time. There are a number of good restaurants along the lake (mostly cafes attached to hotels).

Alternatively, you could take a train from the airport and continue down the lake to Vevey, Lausaunne or Montreux. Lausaunne is about 30 minutes by train, the other towns are a bit further. You might not have time to do much else but turn around and get on the next train, but the ride along the lake is very pretty.

The website for Swiss Rail is sbb.ch, you can find train times from the airport (flughafen) to Geneva and the other towns mentioned above.

LOYL, you have received good advices.

Just a tiny precision. Cicerone said 65 dollars (CHF77) for a taxi ride, being on the safer side, I suppose, but Geneva airport to the city center (Let's say the main railway station) is average CHF35(about 32 dollars)during the day. During night/early morning about 20 % surcharge. 32 vs 65, well finally it is an important precision to make. You can always take the train, as already advised, which is only 7 minutes ride and departs every 20 minutes.

Vevey and Montreux are 1 hour away by train, sometimes requiring a transfer in Lausanne, plus figure you could have to wait 15 mins. or more to catch one each way. That's possibly used up 2-1/2 hours, cutting it pretty darn close at the airport IMO.

MAYbe downtown Geneva, but even that I'd figure 10 mins. to get from airport next door to train statin, wait 15 mins., train 15 mins., walk around 30 mins., wait 15 mins. train back 15 mins., 10 mins. into airport... almost 2 hours.
