What do you wear in Venice in August?
Haven't been to the city in 25 years. Are there any guidelines for dress, either practical or conventional that are worth keeping in mind? Any input welcome, thanks.

Yes - it will be hot as hell and humid. Wear something thin and breathable. No jeans - too heavy (you'll suffocate).
For going into St Mark's - you must cover kness (no shorts or short skirts) and shoulders/top of arms (no tank tops or bare midriff, low cut necklines)

Are you male or female? =) I just experienced Venice in three different types of weather - hot and humid, stormy, and then cool on a different day. I wore several thin skirts with nice tank tops and had a light jacket for the cool day. My DH wore a thin pair of khaki pants and nice shirt in the evenings... shorts during the day. Hope that helps! Enjoy...

I don't think there's a good clue for that. I just thought when I was there that even if I nude myself ..I still be sweating all day long. So dress yourself with the most comfortable (and light) things you have and begin to walk In the evenings it depends on what kind of places do you like to go, but I'm sure you'll soon notice how to dress when you get there.

I would pack loose fitting, light weight clothes. Slacks or knee length shorts, nice shirt for men. Skirt, capri, or palazzo style pants with blouse or top for women. Comfortable walking shoes. I have been in Venice twice in August and it was very very hot when I was there.
For myself I wore sandals, sleeveless cotton blouse, and capris and carried something extra to slip on if I wanted to go inside a cathedral or church.

Hlocke1: Were you in Venice on July 5? Because you described the weather that day perfectly. Otherwise, it was brutally hot. I pretty much wore lightweight linen pants and white t-shirts the whole time, and though I had packed a couple of long-sleeved linen blouses, it was even too hot for those.
