I will be in the Umbria area visiting my neice this summer for a few days...do you have any suggestions for some side trips before I go back to the States. Have been to Florence, Rome, Venice and was thinking of the Southern part of Italy....any suggestions that is economical and good for a traveling single lady.....thanks so much for your help.

Side trips from where? What is your transportation situation? Do you prefer outdoor activities, art, ceramics, history, food...? You are thinking of southern Italy from....Umbria?
Umbria is a province with Perugia in the north and Orvieto, Todi and Spoleto in the south. Surely your niece will have ideas for side trips from her location. I wouldn't think being single and a woman would have any effect on your choices--very safe throughout.

You could base yourself in Sorrento and do day trips to Capri, Pompeii, AC.
Or were you thinking of farther south? There was an interesting thread several years ago on Basilicata. It gets topped occasionally.

Here's the thread I was thinking of. There are also other threads about this area.

Did you visit Orvieto, Todi, Spoleto, Norcia, Assisi, Perugia, Bevagna,..., and the towns of southern Tuscany such as Pienza, San Quirico d'Orcia? It would certainly be more economical and time efficient to visit the beautiful area where you will be, wouldn't it?
