give us some sort of idea of what you've done, as far as research and what types of things or cities your leaning towards. There are so many great towns to see, but with only one day you may want to focus on visiting 2 cities. Have you ever been to Umbria?
There's Orvieto, Todi, spoleto, Assisi, Gubbio, Perugia etc...all worth a visit. If you love churches and beaustiful frescoes, you may want to put assisi on the list for sure.

We are based in Sienna but will be picking up a friend who is coming in on a ferry to Ancona, I thought that she could get a train to maybe Perugia or Assisi and we could do a day of exploring in that area. I just found out that on the 21st Oct the day we'll be there that there is the eurochocolate festival on in Perugia so that is one thing to do!

Perugia is one of my favorite cities in Italy. With the EuroChocolate Festival there, and the headquarters of Perugina chocolate in the nearby suburb of San Sisto, how can you go wrong? Perugia is a great city to daytrip to, even if all you do is eat chocolate and stand on the perimeter of "uptown" Perugia and look out over hundreds of square miles of Umbria.
