Villa San Michele (Ravello) $$$$

Can I get opinions on VSM vs the cost of getting there? Between the euro and airfare...geee it's getting crazy.

I wonder if less Americans are going over these days..I was hoping there would be some incentive with air travel but over $3000.00 to get over there!!

This place looks so perfect for us...do I just die broke and go$

If it makes you feel better, I've stayed in the Villa San Michele "in Ravello" and it's not actually in Ravello -- or at least not in the part of Ravello most people want to spend a lot of money to stay in. It's down on the rocks of the seacost (the famous part of Ravello is way up in the hills, with gardens, cliff and sea views).

When I was there, their restaurant was closed, and eating out at night involved a somewhat unpleasant walk along the highway to the nearest town of Atrani -- which is a sweet beach town, but there are ones equally nice that are easier to get to.

Why don't you post your total budget and where you're coming from and maybe people can direct you to an affordable beauty spot by a sea, either in Italy or elsewhere.

Thanks, the place does look lovely and of right size for me..

Just for $5000 I could live like a king at a Ritz or FS?? But then you wouldn't have that Italian coastline.

We are running out of places to go in the US for us. Caribbean is out of the question for September..

Life is to short to stay home.......not sure what to do?

There are lots of beautiful places in the Amalfi and on the nearby islands. You should do Google image searches for Positano, Praiano, Ravello and Capri and Procida.

There is also the beautiful towns of Liguria, like Camogli, Portovenere and le Cinque Terre. (There's Sicily, Corsica and Sardegna, too. Not to mention Greece and Turkey.)

If you end up staying at Villa San Michele, the easiest way to get there if you come through Napoli is to take the train to Salerno, then come up the coast to the Villa.

On the other hand, if you take the bus from Napoli/Sorrento, you see the entire coastline. You'd have to change buses in the town of Amalfi.

I don't know where you're coming from in the states, but I just saw BA advertising $700 RT fares. Aer Lingus often has good fares.

Then you need to get to Italy.

If you are stuck on going to the Amalfi, you need to fly to Roma or Napoli. If you see a cheap fare for Genova or Palermo, remember that there are overnight ferries from both places to Napoli.

You can probably get that $3000 air fare down.

There are lots of pretty villas in Italy, many with sea views, and you should state at what price your trip becomes affordable in terms of accommodations.
