Traveling from Stresa to Geneva

We are planning a trip and would like to include Stresa and Geneva. We chose Stresa because everything we have read seems like Stresa is the location which works best to visit that side of the lake region. Were considering Lucerne, Zurich or Geneva - and Geneva seemed to be the place we could experience the most in the shortest period of time. Need recommendations on 4 - 5 star hotels in Geneva and Stresa. Location is very important as we will not have a car. Also, any "must" sees?

Thanks for your help!

Not sure what you want to see/do - but Geneva is NOT in the Alps and if that is your reason to visit Switz I would reconsider staying in a city away from the Alps and head to the Berner Oberland instead.

If you don;t care for the outdoors/mountain, then Geneva is OK - although I prefer Lucerne for a better view of Switz.

For hotels it would help to have a specific nightly budget - esp since Switz is so expensive.

And can you clarify if "we" is a couple - or if there are other people in your group.

nytraveler - did you read the original posting?

He wants to go to Gneva. What has the Alps got to do with it? He mentions 4 or 5 star hotels so I presume he already has an idea of pricing.

Most big hotels at Stresa are close to both, the railway sattion and the boat's pier.
You may have a look at the maps of http://www.booking.com/
and at the Stresa website: http://www.stresa.com/hotels

At Geneva, the 42 4and5star hotels are either along the Lake, the Rhone river, or close to the historic center, the railway station or the airport (check with www.booking.com)
They are all linked by tramways and city buses to all places of the town.
I suppose you know that Montreux would be a nicer place along Lake Geneva than Geneva itself.
You may also check hotels Beau-Rivage, Chateau d'Ouchy and Angleterre at Lausanne as well as
Mirador Kempinsky, Grand Hotel du Lac and Des Trois Couronnes at Vevey

No the OP said was considering Geneva, Lucerne and Zurich.

And saying you want to stay in a certain type of hotel does NOT mean you know what the prices are. Many people are especially surprised at the prices in Switz which are much higher than in the US.

I have seen posters asking for 5* hotels for US$250 - which just isn't going to happen.

Sorry - in Geneva we have stayed at the Beau Rivage which is a 5% near the center and costs about $800 per night for a basic double room - although a search might find better rates.

In Lucerne both the Wilden Mann and the Balances - pleasant 4* we have stayed at - seem to be available for about US$300 per night on discount sites. We have not stayed at the Palace, which I believe is a 5* and is closer to $400 per night. All of these hotels are central.

And all rooms are one double bed for 2 people,
