I am a little overwhelmed by the transportation options and all the websites are adding to my confusion. Our hotel is close to the Rosenheimer Platz station. We would like to go to Dachau one day. One person suggested we use the MVV Munich XXL day ticket. I understand that we need to take the S2 then get on a bus once we arrive in Dachau. What I'm not understanding is whether I can get on the S2 at the station near us or will we need to switch once we get to the Hauptbahnhof (which I'm understanding to be Munich's central station). I'm also having difficulty finding timetables on the MVV site, but think I've figured it out on the bahn website.

To add to this, we plan on being in Munich for 4 days and then heading to Salzburg. There will be 6 adults and 2 kids. At one point someone mentioned a Bayern Pass that up to 5 of us could use. Would it be wiser to use this?

Take any S2 train towards Petershausen or Dachau from Rosenheimer Platz.

Regional transport Munich-Salzburg is now served by Meridian trains.
The Bayern Ticket is valid on those trains, though the Meridian Guten Tag daypass is a bit cheaper.
The latter does not cover the 1 stop with the S-Bahn from Rosenheimer Platz to Ostbahnhof where you catch the train to Salzburg, though. And can only be bought at Ostbahnhof.
So in the end, it may still be more convenient for you to buy the Bayern Ticket at Rosenheimer Platz S-Bahn station. Kids under 15 don't count when they accompany parent(s) or grandparent(s). If that was the case you'd need one Bayern Ticket for 5 people, and one single Bayern Ticket (for the last adult).

Just beware that while the Bayern Ticket (but not the Meridian day pass) also serves as a day pass for all of Munich's public transport, it is not valid on Salzburg's buses.

It's a very short ride...Dachau is "suburb close". With your crowd, I would suggest a van taxi..no hassle and probably cheaper than all the train tx..(or even take a bus instead). Dachau is a two-hour visit IME.

Disregard what I wrote about kids not counting for the Bayern Ticket.
I just checked the terms and they became crazy byzatine.

If these 2 kids (under 15) are both the kids of one in your party, it is easy:
These 3 travel on one Bayern Ticket for ONE person.
The rest of your party then uses a Bayern Ticket for 5 people.

If the 2 kids (under 15) belong to different people in your group, it gets more complicated.
From what I have understood, the easiest way would be to get again one Bayern Ticket for 5 people, and another one for 2 people. One of the kids would then travel as a paying adult but this still looks cheaper than any other option.

Kids 15 or older are treated like adults fare-wise.

Honestly, that is the weirdest fare rule I have seen in ages.

A taxi ride from Rosenheimer Platz in Munich to the Dachau memorial site will cost appr. 40 euros each way, so in total appr. 80 euros.
