Tourist Scams TV series

Hello,
I'm working on a series of documentaries on Tourist Scams all over the world (Europe, States, South America etc...) . We want to focus of clever elaborate scams rather than individual cases of people being ripped off. Have you ever fallen for the Gem Stones scam in Bangkok, the Carpet scam in Morocco, or the Scratchcard scam in Spain, for example?
I am especially keen on hearing from any tourists who have been scammed whilst on holiday in the UK - are there any of you out there?!
My telephone number is 0044 (0)1273 224 251 and my email address is:
[email protected]
I look forward to hearing all your stories!
Kyra

Where exactly will this documentary be shown? With what company are you affiliated?

Are you planning on flying people into the UK to interview them? Or trek al over the world interviewing them where they live?

Or are you going to "recreate" the scams using actors?

Exactly what ARE you doing (don;t know how to do a documentary without video - but perhaps you have a new method?)

The Scratchcard scam is not a tourist scam here in Spain. It has been practised to locals for more years than anyone can remember , certainly, very much before the first tourist came here
I think you need a better documentation than the one we can provide here.

YOu know, that's a good question. I think Kyra just wants to take people's ideas so she can write her own documentary and film it (or at least people she knows). Once in a while a journalist (freelance, usually) comes on this board and tries to get ideas from other people. If it's in print, and an interview or something, that makes sense, but I don't understand the documentary. I suppose they will use the idea but go film some "re-enactment" of the scam somewhere.

I haven't fallen for any scams as I'm not that dumb.

At least this is a real company that does distribute films (doesn't seem to make them, not clear), you can read about that.

I think she is real, although she isn't definingin herself here, and her her email address isn't their norm without a last name. I think her name is Kyra Beguiristain and she's an associate producer at Electric Sky Productions (or says she is). She used to work at International House in London, but that's been a few years.

She's been on a lot of boards asking about scams, and not just tourist scams. She's interested in those buy-a-bride marriage scams (such as from Russia or Thailand, etc), also, although I don't know why that would be considered a tourist scam, which is supposed to be the theme of this documentary.

I suspect this could be for the Travel Channel (on other places, she has said it was for a US based channel).

Christina,

"I haven't fallen for any scams as I'm not that dumb."

Are you sure? If it were a really clever scam, you might never know.

:-"

Feel free to check my profile, and you'll see I've posted on this site for years. Eight years, to be exact, meaning I started posting before you needed to register. I'm obviously not just someone who came along in order to boost Kyra's credibility.

ANYWAY, I recently replied to a similar request from Jenny Jopsen, another hire of Electric Sky Productions (hey, Kyra -- tell Jenny I enjoyed my trip to New York!). I e-mailed Ms Jospen back, telling how I had my identity stolen during a trip, and the person eventually ran up $13000 in bills in my name. She was sufficiently interested to interview me, and to have me re-create the events involving this ID theft. I got free transport, lodging, and meals for New York City; and, even though the taping schedule left no time for any sight-seeing, I'll always take a free trip to New York.

So, if nothing else, if you really WERE a victim of some travel scam, at least e-mail the details. Electric Sky would be a great place to spread the word on what happened to you, and help warn others to not repeat your mistakes. And you MIGHT just get a free trip in the process!

I suspect the absolute perfect scam is one which is carried out and the victim never finds out.

Dukey, you're right..the best scams are the ones that you notice a few days later.... The so called tourist scams are easier, not as much thought by the person doing it.
