Salerno to Praiano Transportation

I will be arriving in Salerno 7 September at 0930 and need to get to Praiano. I do have the bus and ferry schedules and can make those connections. However, I have read in posts, here and elsewhere, about some difficulties with the bus transportation. At this point, I am not sure that I want the hassle of trying to lug the luggage on and off a crowded bus, especially on a busy weekend. Does anyone have an idea about the cost of private transport to Praiano from Salerno?
Thank you.

Since Salerno is the start/end of that SITA route you should have a simple time in boarding---not so further down the pike.

A private driver will be about 100E. You may negotiate something better with a local taxi driver.

I don't advise trying to take the bus. You can throw the schedule away because the buses are highly unreliable. You would need to take a bus from Salerno to Amalfi and then another one to Praiano. Also keep in mind that the ferry doesn't run if there is a hint of bad weather.

I suggest a private driver if you must go from Salerno. If you can change your plans and depart from Naples instead, the Positano Shuttle picks up at the Naples airport or train station, and delivers you right to your door in Praiano...all for only 35 euro per person. http://www.positanoshuttle.com/

Hi Abb,

We took the SITA bus.

It starts across the street from the train station in Salerno.
IIRC, there is a luggage compartment under the bus.
It stops on the main street in Praiano.

I think that you have to buy your bus ticket in the train station. Check this.

Enjoy your visit.

Another option is to take the ferry from Salerno to Positano (the ferry dock is very near the train station), then walk up and catch a taxi for the short ride to Praiano.

Thank you all for the info. My first choice is the ferry, weather permitting. If not, the SITA bus sounds reasonable as it is at the beginning/end of the route which I had not considered. We are trying to make this trip with carry on luggage vice the larger bags we have used in the past. So that should not be a problem with the bus. Maybe.

Only 32 days to departure...Rome, Praiano, Monticchiello (Pienza) and Florence. I have been planning this 3 week trip for nine months and everything is coming together nicely. Luckily, I am self-employed because the work ethic is starting to wane.

It won't be a problem sticking your luggage under the bus. The bus will pull into a lot in Amalfi (if coming from Salerno) where the other buses are located that go onto Praiano. You are usually expected to open the luggage bins and close them (if no one else is retrieving luggage too). Some drivers open them, others don't. Validate your ticket!

You validate the ticket on the bus. There is a machine just behind the driver.

Here is an alternative we used when the bus from Salerno was full: We were in a queue for the bus the day before the April 25 holiday. When the bus arrived, swarms of students got on, leaving folks with luggage in what looked like a hopeless situation. We turned to a Chinese couple with luggage and asked where they were headed and if they wanted to share a taxi. They did, we got a price and off we went towards Amalfi. As we passed Atrani, we asked if we could get off there. My husband paid the taxi driver 10 euros....I caught it in time and realized he thought the driver had said 8 euros instead of 80 for the four of us. Almost set Chinese-American relations back some more. Anyway, 40 euros did not seem a bad deal when we were anxious to get to our destination.
