Rome penthouse in Trastevere - Lungotevere Portuense - seeking opinions
Hello everyone! We are going back to Rome next April for three nights, this time with another couple. My husband and I have already been to Rome three times but the last time was in 06. I LOVE this penthouse but I'm not familiar with it's location and I'm a little worried that it's a bit too far from some of the sites. I don't mind a bit of a walk or a train ride but I also don't want to be too far removed. Can those familiar with Rome please take a look at the link below and give me your opinion on the location?

My boyfriend and I stayed not far from there at the Hotel San Francesco last time I visited Rome. I found everything in easy walking distance and Trastevere itself is a lively place with great restaurants and bars.

It would be too far removed for me.
Here are some of their apts in the good (and convenient) part of Trastevere:

Tracy...
As fabulous as the apartment looks, I have to agree with bardo1, for me, it would be a little too far removed. It seems pretty "deep" into Trastevere from the historic center of Rome.
The link bardo1 provided for the penthouse apartment near John Cabot University is (IMHO) in a more central Trastevere location, but I noticed it only has one bedroom and you are going with another couple, and probably need a 2 bedroom, yes?
I'm sorry I don't have another option to give you, but I used Rome Capitol Apartments last year and they were great to deal with, you may want to check out their offerings too.
Happy trip planning and Ciao!

Hi Tracy,
That's wonderful that you are getting back into the travel groove!
While the apartment is large and the terrace of course is great, it looks like it could be an apartment anywhere and in my opinion lacks charm. Also, that location is more of the modern area of Trastevere and is quite a trek from the centro storica. I am staying in Trastevere Oct. 7-13, in an apt. just across the Tiber from the Isola Tiberna and Jewish Ghetto. It is on via della Luce. I love Trastevere. I think you get much more of a local feel there. After a long day of sightseeing it feels like going home to cross the bridge into what feels like a little village. I would definitely try to get closer to center of the "old" Trastevere, close to Ponte Sisto or near Piazza Santa Maria. Or Piazza Trilussa. I always rent through www.realrome.com. Tim Pearson is wonderful to work with and now a good friend. Good luck with your search. Where else are you going?

Thank you all so much! We've been to Trastevere, but haven't spent much time there other than visiting Santa Maria in Trastevere and having lunch and a short stroll. I admit that the apartment lacks local character that I normally look for, but that terrace is wonderful and I do like the idea of seperate bathrooms!
Thanks for the recommendations for other sites to look at as well. Greatly appreciated!!

It isn't in Old Trastevere, but there is the 8 tram that runs along Viale Trastevere and takes you all the way to Largo Argentina, one of the major bus hubs in the historical center (and arguably the center of the tourist area), in about 10 minutes. In the end, I think it's a question of how much you want to spend. The price is hard to beat for an apartment that large (especially with a terrace).

I agree with others the location is quite far out from the historic center. You could get to the other parts of Trastevere and to the Largo Argentina very easily with the #8 tram but would not be able to stroll out of your apartment to the major sites.
I agree with Barb's suggestion to check out the realrome.com offerings for other options. You are not going to find such a large apartment in the center for the same price so have to decide whether the space or the location is a higher priority.

I agree that the No 8 tram will get you where you need to be. OK, you aren't right in the city centre, but that's not the end of the world. We stayed MUCH further out along via Portuense and that was a mistake as it took us ages to get into the city centre. But this apartment looks spacious and the terrace would be lovely.
Tracy, how are your gorgeous girls?

Thanks everyone! We decided on a smaller two-bedroom apartment near Piazza Navona instead. We've stayed in this area several times before and I'm quite pleased with the location. However, the rental is with Rent in Rome and I'm a bit nervous given some of the comments I've seen about this company on various travel websites. I guess we'll cross our fingers!
