We have the opportunity of just one day in Ravenna around the middle of next year. It's a city famous for many wonderful UNESCO heritage-listed mosaics spread throughout several churches, mausoleums, baptistries etc all over (and some a little way out of) the town. I've been busy planning and researching the various sites and how to get to them, so as to see as much as we can while still leaving time for a relaxing lunch and some quiet reflection on what we've seen so far - a tall order!

We've just found out that our day in Ravenna will be a Sunday. Will this be a problem? I imagine the churches will be running services and may not welcome sightseers on a Sunday, while some of the other non-church places (mausoleums etc) may be closed.

Is this likely? Or does tourism carry on as normal, even on Sunday, in Ravenna? Hoping that some of you fodorites who know Ravenna can help us with this one.

We went on a Sunday and didn't have any problems. That was some time ago, so the situation now may be different.

Yup we went on Sunday as well, but most shops and restaurants were closed. Sights were all open though.

You may get delayed by a mass but you should be able to view most things.

I agree with Jamikins on commercial closures.

Finally, Ravenna has the usual no car zone. There good parking near San Vitale, and I would leave the car there while you are in town.

Most--if not all- of the World Heritage Sites do not function as ordinary parish churches, anyway.
