Places to stay in Venice
Thanks to everyones help, we have finally decided on our locations and dates. Now We are just looking for a place to stay in Venice. Does anyone have any recommendations. Will it matter if we are closer to travel to the airport or is the city small enough not to matter? Are there any areas that are better to stay in than others? We would prefer to find a place that would not require dragging our laugage all over town. Will the hotels provide tranport to and from the ferry?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks again.

You won't be near the airport. It's not necessary.
We just got back and loved our stay at Palazzo Foscari. Very recently remodeled with lovely decor. Accommodating staff. It's only a few steps from the Ca d'Oro vaporetto stop...very easy. And they provided a delightful "Soiree" one night with free champagne and a period-costumed duet playing classical music.

We arrived in Venice by train, but took the bus to the airport when we left. Perhaps someone else can advice you about arrival.
You'll love Venice. We did!

We stayed at the Londra Palace which is located right on the front, with stunning views over to San Giorgio Maggiore.
The ferry from the airport dropped us off at San Marco Giardinetti, and it was only a short walk down Riva degli Schiavoni to the hotel.
Tchaichovsky stayed in room 106 whilst he composed his 4th symphony no less !
The hotel itself was wonderful, with a superb buffet breakfast.

We really loved the Palazzo Sant'Angelo. You can check it out at sinahotels.com. It's a small luxury hotel, done in traditional Venetian style but it is relatively new, so very nice furnishings and marble bathrooms. Room was very large, and we got a room with a balcony right on the Grand Canal. Enjoy!

Two words.....Locanda Orseolo. A truly great small hotel on a canal just off St. Mark's Square. However, it is popular and sometimes difficult to get a reservation but SO worth it. We loved it there and would stay no where else in Venice.

We stayed at Pensione Accademia www.pensioneaccademia.it this past August and absolutely loved it. It was our third visit to Venice and would definitely stay there again.

We stayed at the Hotel Giorgione and loved it. Very nice location away from the crowds and yet short walks to just about everywhere.
I also agree that taking a taxi from the airport is a wonderful way to enter Venice. The driver will bring you to the closest canal to whatever hotel you choose.
When we were looking for a hotel in Venice, one of our concerns what that there not be too many...or any...bridges to cross with our heavy luggage because the bridges have steps and it is not always easy to maneuver the luggage.
Lucky for us, out hotel was one short block from the canal with no bridges.

I rented an apartment the last time I was in Venice (Nov '05) and it was wonderful. I like it better than staying in a hotel because you have a fridge & stove, washer, much more room, and you can get a bit of feel about what it might be like to live there. Here's the posting for the apt. http://www.anticomartini.com/appartamento.htm It's much cheaper than a hotel and the owner, Lucina, meets you at the vaportto stop and brings you there to get settled in. The apt. is very close to the S'Angelo waterbus stop on the grand canal. Maybe a 3-5 minute walk. It's also in a great location between Rialto & San Marco, and near Accademia. It can be a bit tricky to find your way to these places (unless u take the vaporetto) since Venice is like a maze - but after a few tries you get the hang of it. Although I've been there 5 times so I think I'm getting used to the confusing streets & alleys.... One thing I must say though, if you have time, try to catch the symphony at the Teatro La Fenice, Venice's opera house - it is truly amazing. Breathtaking. And I'm not into classical music at all, but i was mezmerized. I'm not sure what the cost is or how difficult it is to get a ticket since I have a connection with a member of the syphony so I didn't pay - but whatever it is, it's worth it!

We stayed at the Pensione Accademia in May, 2004 and we think it is superb. There is a bit of a walk (equalivalent of about three blocks in the US.) I have also stayed in a hotel closer to San Marco, but much prefer the Accademia, which is across the Grand Canal (via the picturesque Accademia Bridge) in the Dorsoduro district -- a little further from the crowded San Marco area.
Taxi to the airport would have been something over 75 Euro. We took the Vaporetto to the Piazale Roma and then the familiar orange city bus to the airport -- quick, easy, and cheap!
Do purchase a mutlti-day transportation pass. You will find riding the Vaporetti a wonderful way to get around and to sight-see as you do so!
