PARIS - Hotel Bel Ami? Hotel Lutetia?
Hi, I have not been to Paris but have decided to stay in either the 6th or the 1st. Any advice between the Bel Ami and the Lutetia? Any other recommendations in either location? THANKS for your help!

The Lutetia is one of the few (only?) very large hotels in the 6th. It is a landmark building. I have family who stayed there a few years ago, it is not tops in luxury but convenient and with large-ish rooms, at least compared with many Paris hotel rooms. Part of the Concorde chain.
Any other recommendations in either location? There are a gazillion.
What are you looking for.

As to the two hotels you named, neither hotel is in the 1st district. The Bel Ami, small and modern, is located nicely in the heart of St. Germain des Pres (6th district). The Lutetia is a large, older hotel and is located in the 6th dist. as well. However, the Lutetia is further up from the Blvd. St. Germain, the main street in the district, on rue de Sevres and closeby to the Bon Marche department store. Also decor is a bit different for both hotels. If I had to choose between the two for location I would choose the Bel Ami.
There are other nice St. Germain hotels. Seems like you have a generous budget and my suggestions would be the following:
Hotel Luxembourg Parc
Hotel de l' Abbaye
Hotel Le Madison
Hotel Pont Royal
The first three are small hotels whereas the Pont Royal is larger.

I love the Bel Ami, it is wonderful. It's not as large as is the Lutetia, but it's better located for first timers, I think. Comparing rates at other 4 stars hotels in the neighborhood, as D'Aubusson, the Lutetia, the Bel Ami has the most reasonable ones.
Service is top notch, although some rooms are small, as it's usual for Paris hotels, so I advise you to book at least a Superior room. Some rooms at the Lutetia are said to be worn out, and their decor is ugly.
Lutetia has two restaurants, Bel Ami has none, but there are many close by. The Petit Zinc is steps away, as is Relais d'Entrecote, as well as many, many others.
The Bel Ami's website offers some very reasonable packages with breakfast (buffet) included. Check it out.
