I will second Angels Home...stayed there last summer. Not too expensive, good location, clean and nice staff. If you stay there though...I would not recommend going to the 'great restaurant' that they will try and entice you to go to for dinner --I think that the owners of the hotel and restaurant are friends or something--the restaurant was expensive and not very good (wish I could remember the name of the restaurant; seemed like a good idea at the time as they had the restaurant's van come and pick our group up at the hotel and take us to the dinner).

Hotel Ambassador www.hotelambassador.com was my choice but unavailable for the dates I wanted. I visited it anyway and the staff was delightful. There are several online booking agencies that offer Istanbul hotels; I had good luck with www.gtahotels.com

Hi there,
I wonder what you mean by "cheap" - to some folks reasonable is $250 a night, so cheap might be ??? $100.
Last time I went to Istanbul (2003) I stayed at the Side Pension in Sultanhamet. It was $30US for a single room with a lovely tiled bathroom. Breakfast is included and you eat it on a roof top terrace. Lovely place - handy for everything.
I thought it might not be such a bargain four years on, but the rates still seem very reasonable to me.

I was there in late May and the lack of a/c was not a problem - but then I loathe air conditioning unless we are talking serious humidity and temps over 30C. I doubt you'd need it in Sept but if it bothers you then you might like the Hotel instead of the Pension.
As to where else to go. On my first visit to Turkey, way way back, I spent 5 days in Istanbul, flew to Antalya (smaller town with a nice vibe) then bussed it to Izmir, visited Ephesus and took boat-train (actually train and boat in that order) back to Istanbul. That was 14 days.
You might think of spending 4-5 days in Istanbul (loads to see) then fly down to the SW for a beach. Travel back north towards Izmir by bus, seeing Ephesus on the way and train/boat or bus or fly back to Istanbul.
Turkish airways fly to Bodrum, Dalaman, etc. Check their site.
Suggest you get hold of a guide book from the library and read up to see where might suit you.
The more easily accessible beach places are fairly commercialised. But that means nightlife and activities, and maybe that's what you want. Even if you don't Olu Deniz is beautiful.

Waiting, I am LMAO at your post. Two friends of mine, Tom and Brian, stayed at Angel's Home a few years ago. The owner of the hotel took one look at the Rolex watch on Brian's wrist and the next thing you know Tom and Brian are in his car speeding off to his friend's carpet/tile/home decor shop. He would not take "no" for an answer. He also tried to get them to have a dinner on the rooftop deck, but they decline. Outside of the owner, they said the hotel was clean and in a very good location. (I walked past it when I was in Sultanahmet.)
