Munich train station to airport
We are flying out of Munich on a Tuesday morning at 11:00 am. I was thinking of taking a train in from Salzburg that morning rather than leave Salzburg on Mon night and find a hotel, etc. in Munich. There are several trains that we can take..I'm looking at choices that will get us to Munich between 7 and 8 am. I have 2 questions ... how long will it take to get from the Munich train station to the airport at that time of morning (is a taxi most efficient or a subway). Also, I'm assuming a 9 am arrival is sufficient (2 hours prior to flight). Anyone with experience in the Munich airport..is that sufficient, or is it usually very crowded so that we should allow 3 hours?
Thanks for your help!

Hi Anne-
I would say during rush hour, you'd be better off taking the S-bahn instead of a taxi. If you get off at Ostbahnhof, take the S-8 which will get you to the airport in 32 minutes. Single ticket is €8.
Fodors.com estimates a taxi to the airport costs €50 and recommends allowing 1hr travel time during rush hour.

Anne-
If you decide to take the S-bahn, consider buying your journey as 1 trip from Salzburg - Munich Airport. I looked at DB's website. If you buy it as a single trip, it'll be €5 cheaper than if you buy Salzburg-Munich + separate S-bahn ticket (Munich-Munich Airport)

Last year I took a train from the south (Bernau) to S-Bahn to airport. It worked just like yk says, single ticket. Change platforms at Ostbanhof. Two hours from airport arrival was ok, tho security was extremely thorough. Count your change in the airport, twice I got handed a €1 coin when it should have been €2

You do not give any details of your itenerary; how long you will be in Salzburg or if you will have spent any time at all in Munich. If you will have spent two or three days in Salzburg and have never spent any time in Munich I would highly recommend going into Munich to spend your last night before flying out. Munich is a really great city with lots to see and do even for one night. There are many nice moderately priced hotels within walking distance of the central train station and you can walk to Marienplatz and other interesting areas from the station area. If you have an interest in World War II history; it is only 25 minutes to Dachau (WW II concentration camp) from Munich main station. You'll also be less stressed getting to your flight on time.

Thanks for the info all...sounds like it is doable if we want to come in from Salzburg in the morning, so now we just have to make a choice about going the night before or the morning of our flight. I also saw something about a direct bus from Salzburg to the Munich airport, so we'll look into that too.
Thanks again!
