transportation munich airport to old town
how much could I expect to pay for a cab from the airport to the old town of munich? Is the public transportation easy from the airport to the old town and how much would I expect to pay for that? Thanks - Sandy W

Here's a link for the S-Bahn map. As you can see, both the S-1 and S-8 trains start out from the airport and pass through the center (Marienplatz, Hbf, etc.). Expect it to take around 45 minutes.
A couple of years ago we took a cab from the RR station to the airport and it cost 45 Euro (and at one point the taxi driver was going 130 MPH!) so these days I suspect the fare would be higher.
There is also the Lufthansa bus which links the downtown area with the airport.
I am not certain of the cost of the S-Bahn but both it and the bus will be cheaper than a taxi

We just returned from Munich and found the S-Bahn from the airport to downtown to be really easy. The station is right outside the terminals and down an escalator. I think for 2 people it was about 15-17 euro for the 45 minute trip.

Here is a link describing the s1/s8 for airport users:

My plane reached the gate around 3pm (no checked luggage), bought the S-bahn ticket from a vending machine in the terminal 2, walked across the airport plaza, validated the ticket and hopped on 3:22pm S8 train to downtown -- it was amazingly easy and fast. I did study the airport layout beforehand, so I knew where to find the vending machine and that I need to get to the basement of terminal 1 to get on the train.

We got an all day all zone partner ticket (described in the first link as well as in Rick Steves's guide) for €17 as we used s-bahn in addition to getting to the downtown.
