Looking for GrandFather's village. Where can I find maps of Greece around 1885?

My GrandFather was born in 1885 and sailed from Patras in 1907. I am planning my 1st trip to Greece and would like to find his village.
Last name is Michalopoulos and I understand the the ending 'poulos' indicates the Pelloponese.
The village name on the ship's Manifest is Sireamo, or Sircamo or Siriamo or Siriamis, or Siriamio. The handwriting is hard to read. I can't find this on recent maps. Possibly around Valtesiniko, but don't know for sure.
Appreciate any help on this.

The suffix "-poulos" indicates the Pelloponese but is a much more ancient thing that the final years of the XIX century. I mean, it could be your grand father grand grand father(or even more distant) the one who came from there and your grand father being born in any other place in the country.
I suppose you know this site but just in case :

I was also going to send you the ellis island website.

I will ask my parents, both born in villages in the Pelloponessus if they have an idea.
I assume you've already asked your relatives.

Good luck.

Do you live near a university? University libraries generally have very good map collections, including old ones. It does not cost anything to use the research facilities and librarians don't mind helping with quests like this.

sorry, neither of my parents have heard of it (them). In fact, they said there are so many villages in Greece, even Greeks in Greece could not be sure of all them.
Good luck with your research!

Thankyou all for your responses. The Ellis Island site is where I amazingly found the Ship's Manifest. It is on this that it had the Village of Birth for my grandfather. The handwriting is hard to read.

Yasoo, Marinos...try this address..an excellent late 19th century map of the Pelloponese...FEEFHS is an excelent source for old European maps and I've used their site on many occasions during my research into that period. Good luck..

Could it be either Sarakini or Simiades (the closest spellings I could find near Valtesiniko)?

I think the spelling in the manuscript can be bad. I suppose the person that wrote it didn't know a word about Greece or Greek Language, and probably your grand father only spoke that so it can be incorrectly written.

Hi Marinos, I just found out my grandmother was from Siriamo, Gortonia Greece. When I entered Siriamo on the internet your story came up and that's how I found this site.
My grandmother arrived in the US in 1912 and she was born in either 1898 or 1900.
I have been trying to find a name close to Siriamo and the only name I could find is Syriamakos Arcadia, Greece.
If I find out more info on the village Siriamo, I will let you know.
I am really happy that at least I know someone else was born in this village.
Thank you!

Couldn't get that link to open, Stu. Are you sure it is correct?

No I am not sure it is correct. But as I said, that was the closest name I could find. Siriamo, Syriamakos.

Syriamakos is a village that exists today.
It is in Gortynias and in the area where all the Greeks were from that came to Milwaukee Wisconsin. It is near Tropaia Greece.

Ancestry.com is where I got the information on my grandmother, through the records that they had. I just got on Ancestry.com a few weeks ago. If I find more information on the village I will contact you.

Thank you!

Nuke:

FEEHS is still in operation but probably the email address has changed. Note that I wrote that response TEN years ago. If you looked up Maps of 19th Century Greece, FEEHS will probably show up. There are genealogical societies for many countries of origin and I'd be surprised if there wasn't one for Greece. I've used The JGS (Jewish Genealogical Society) for years of research for my books and I'm nearly at 100% in finding the village I was looking for. FEEHS has a high percentage of hits also. Good luck!

Nuke, thank you so much! I found a map of West and East Greece from the early 1800's on FEEHS.
I will do my research with this map and hopefully find the village I was looking for.

Thank you!
