Lake Como and Venice - 6 days??
Hello everyone!
My husband and I are looking to do a trip to Lake Como and Venice in early May. He has to be out in Switzerland for a work meeting so we were thinking I would fly in early morning on Monday to Zurich, meet him there and take a train to Lake Como. We would then spend Tuesday and Wednesday in Como (where TBD, recommendations are greatly appreciated!), take the train to Venice on Thursday morning and then spend Friday and Saturday in Venice and fly back to Atlanta on Sunday. Questions:
1. Is this enough time to do everything?
2. How is the weather in these areas early in May?
3. Where should we stay / what should we do at Lake Como?
4. We currently have reservations at Hotel Danielli in Venice, is this a good location?
Any input or advice you may have would be greatly appreciated. We are in our mid thirties and love to travel...not sure if that helps with any advice!
THANKS A BUNCH!!

2.5 days at Lake Como was good for me around that time of year. Personally I think your schedule is fine if I'm reading it correctly. Depends on how quickly you like to travel.
Monday: you arrive in Zurich, you both make your way to somewhere on Lake Como
Tuesday/Wednesday: Lake Como
Thursday: Train to Venice (you'll change in Milan)
Friday/Saturday: full days in Venice
Sunday: fly home
Right?
I don't know about the logistics of getting from Zurich to anywhere on Lake Como. I stayed in Bellagio (Hotel Centrale) in mid-May 2011 and had a great time, though it was very quiet at that time of year (Varenna was beautiful but practically silent; there was more going on in Bellagio and Menaggio). There's not as much to "do" there as in major cities like Venice. One day we went to Castello di Vezio above Varenna, and the next we went to Villa Carlotta.

The train ride from the Zurich Airport to either the town of Como (and then to your hotel) or the town of Varenna would take most of Monday. From Varenna, you could take a short ferry ride to Bellagio if you prefer staying there.
You could save some time if your husband met your flight and you both flew immediately to Milan. You could save even more time if you hired a driver to take you from the Malpensa airport to your hotel on the lake. There are no weather guarantees ever, anywhere, but two days on Lake Como (preferably in the mid-lake area) would be nice. If the weather has been good, the Melzi Gardens in Bellagio should be starting to bloom with azalea and rhododendrum. There are more gardens and some villas you can visit.
If you'd like hotel recommendations for Lake Como, you should tell us your chosen destination and how much you want to spend.
FYI, the fastest train connection from either Varenna Esino or Como Town to Venice is 4 hours.
