Honeymoon in Positano

My fiance & I have decided on Positano for our honeymoon at the end of September. We are flying in to Naples and out of Venice. We have booked Hotel Buca di Bacco for 7 nights in Positano, and Hotel Al Ponte Mocenigo for 3 nights in Venice. I found cheap tickets on easyjet for our flight from Naples to Venice. We choose to splurge a little and reserve the hotel's airport pick up because we know we will be exhausted after a wedding, 2 hour drive to the airport, and long flight from Nashville.

This will be my fiance's first trip to Italy. I went to Cinque Terre, Rome, & Ancona last summer & fell in love. He likes for things to be simple so I want to plan as much before hand as possible.

Excursions. I would LOVE to visit the island of Capri. I've read that several feel as though it is overpriced and overcrowded, but anacapri looks beautiful! How would I go about booking a ferry or boat to Capri? Should we do this before we get there?

What other towns would be easy for us to see? What would a good itinerary for 7 days be for Positano being the base town?

One of my concerns is the price of restaurants in Positano. Any suggestions for reasonably priced meals (less than 20 euros per person)? I know our hotel has a restaurant. Does anyone know how much an average meal is there? Also, they offer cooking classes, which seem like so much fun! However, 120 euro per person seems very high, but it may be worth it? Has anyone ever taken their cooking class?

What is your favorite restuarant in Positano & favorite town on the Amalfi Coast?

Anyone spend their honeymoon in Positano too??

I am looking forward to hearing everyone's responses! Thank ya'll

You are going to have a very hard time eating for 20 euros per person in Positano. For a 7 night stay, you might do better all around to rent an apartment. You can arrange for a car transfer on your own for no more money (possibly less) than a hotel will arrange for you.

An apartment would be cheaper and offer you the option of eating evening meals at "home" on your terrace. Big lunches are usually a cheaper meal in Italy than big dinners, so you can cut costs by making your restaurant meals lunches, and maybe pizza or snacks for dinner. Even so, a typical Italian restaurant, even at lunch, has a cover charge, plus a charge for water, a service charge and tax -- and then you will usually want wine with your meal, and perhaps a dessert and coffee after.

Consider renting an apartment to cut down your lodging cost so you have more money to spend on eating out. The website Summer in Italy is a good place to check out the offerings and prices.

Capri is absolutely beautiful and well worth a visit. In fact, we much preferred it to Positano. Both are crowded and both are expensive but we found Capri to be lovely in the evenings and early mornings before the day-trippers and cruise ships arrived. The Amalfi Coast and Capri are crowded because they are places everyone wants to visit.

I agree with zeppole that eating in Positano will not be inexpensive so search on this board for reasonable alternatives before you leave for Italy.

We used www.summerinitaly.com to rent an apartment in Positano and absolutely loved it. They are super easy to work with and allow you to use a credit card.

For boat cruises we did two with http://www.gennaroesalvatore.it/ and they were the highlight of our trip - in particular the along the coast that includes lunch!

I agree with some of the posts above. Positano is an expensive destination. But I think it's one of- if not the- most beautiful town on the Amalfi Coast. That being said, if you want more affordable choices for accommodations/food, look at Sorrento which is only 30 minutes away. Again, not as pretty/romantic as Positano, but it has very good transportation options by boat/bus/train to most of the places you'll want to visit. For instance, Capri is about 20 minutes away on the hydrofoil, a little more on regularly scheduled boat service. Positano also offers boat service to Capri but it doesn't run as often and can sometimes get cancelled even on a gorgeous day due to water conditions.

As for the apartment option, I think since it's your honeymoon, and your husband's first time to Italy, go for the convenience of a hotel or B&B.

And to answer a few of your questions: In four visits to Sorrento/the AC, we've never bought boat tickets to Capri far in advance. We usually get them the morning of our visit, although if you're going on a tour, that will be arranged for you.

Restaurants: We absolutely love the mountain village town of Montepertuso, a short drive away from Positano, where you'll find some excellent restaurants like Donna Rosa, etc. Many of these restaurants used to arrange roundtrip transportation from hotels in Positano, so if you do decide to stay there, make sure you ask the front desk to arrange it. Try to go at sunset for drinks so you enjoy the view over the mountain to town below. It's really amazing!

We also love the gorgeous sea view restaurant at the Hotel Poseidon in Positano. We've had a couple of long lunches there, and the food has been really extraordinary every time!

Just be aware that these recommendations are for special occasion lunches/dinners, since there's no way you'll get away with 20E per person. I think some of the hotels in Positano keep menus on hand, so you can possibly check ahead for pricing.

Oh, and in Capri, if it's still there- Lo Zodiaco down near Marina Grande ( where the boats come in) had some amazing handmade pizzas/pastas. Pretty reasonably priced, too.

I have to check my files for some other recommendations because I'm blanking on the names. But there is a particular seafood restaurant on the beach in Atrani that was wonderful. I will post the name if I find it.

Lastly, I also recommend a trip along the coast with gennaro e salvatore in Positano. One of the highlights of our trip, too!

Thank you all for your responses! We have already booked our room at Hotel Buca di Bacco. We decided on this hotel because it is located on the beach and it got amazing reviews on Trip Advisor.

Jamikins, thank you for the cruise boat suggestion! I will look into it!
