Help ASAP! Leaving today and need a place for next week in Edinburgh!
Our college aged neighbor is leaving today for a last minute trip to Scotland via Manchester(he was supposed to have gone to Barcelona but it fell through). He is flying into Manchester and going up to Glasgow from there but he wants to visit Edinburgh around next Tuesday for 3-4 days. Every place that he has tried is full so I am asking if any Fodor friends have any suggestions . He just wants a place to stay that is clean, cheap(under $60-70 a night for a single) and somewhat close to things as he will not have a car. He mentioned that most of the hostels he looked at are booked so is open to B and B's or small hotels. Please help as he is desperate!!! Thanks so much-

How about calling or emailing the booking line of the official tourist board:

Hi.
Take a look at the Hanover Hotel on Rose Street. It is a perfect location and the price is right. It does not look like much from the outside--a tiny storefront. But the rooms are very modern and clean with nice amenities.
Also, many hotels (ncluding the Hanover) will place sandwich boards just outside selling rooms at a discount for that night. This would at least afford some breathing room to find more long-term lodging.
You're welcome.

Unfortunately - most places recommended by Fodorites are either popular, good value, or special (or all three) and are likely to be pretty full.
As I mentioned on your other post - Both Glasgow and Edinburgh have terrific Tourist Information Centers. Instead of chasing around on-line trying to find a room -- I'd just wait until I got to Glasgow. Once I was in Glasgow I would go to the TIC and request an Edinburgh B&B or hostel. The Glasgow TIC will contact the Edinburgh TIC and the Ed. TIC will check their database for available rooms in his price range and set up the booking.
TICs all over the UK offer this "book a bed ahead" service.
