Gritti Palace or Europa & Regina in Venice?
Any thoughts on which hotel offers the best overall exerience (location, quality, service, views)? The rates are surprisingly similar, with Europa being slightly less expensive, but the Gritti is not prohibitive. In either, we would book a grand deluxe room (not their lowest category), and hope for a Starwood Preferred upgrade. Which would you choose for a 3 night stay?

Hey maybe I can help you out this time?
We stayed at the Europa y Regina last year. WOW! They treated us like royalty. We booked as Gold Starwood Member/Amex Platinum card. Hoping we would get and upgrade with American express' upgrade program.
When we checked in they told us they are not part of the Amex program. But they thought we would be happy with our room.
My heart sang when he opened our terrace doors. We had a stunning Grand Canal view top floor! I think the terrace was larger than the entire room and bath. Nice big lounge chairs with a table and chairs. One of our favorite hotels in the world. I would never stay anywhere else in Venice. Simply devine.
The room was used when filming the movie Ripley's something--I have forgotten the name
One more thing, arriving in own water
taxi is a must when schlepping luggage.

Wow- you really got lucky on that! I can only hope they will upgrade us, too. I do think we'll stick with the Europa. It seems to be a good choice for location regardless of which room we end up with. Thanks for the input.

Not to sound like a broken record, but ask about room size. Hotel rooms in Europe are generally on the smallish side, and the Westins in Venice have some VERY small rooms. For example, the Europa’s twin room without view is 16 square meters, that is VERY small for two people. You had better hope for an upgrade.
A typical US-style "motel" room with two double beds is about 28 square meters, including the bathroom. You are talking about a room of about half that size, including the bathroom. That is very small.
For two people, you need at least 20 square meters, and even that is going to be very tight and uncomfortabel if you stay more than one night, IMO. Room sizes are listed on Starwood/Westin website, if you click on reservations. Room sizes for some of their canal view rooms are not given, so do ask.
Do avoid the Gritti, it definately needs a redo.
