Dineroguru,

We are a family of 5 travelling to Italy in March. Our kids are ages 4, 6 and 10 and we are interested in finding hotels with quad rooms or affordable apartments. We've had great luck using the suggestions from this web site.

What is your budget and how long will you be travelling? We love staying in one room, but it comes with some drawbacks(Different bedtimes,if somebody wants to read, If you want to talk to your husband). For our longer stretches in a city, we've had great luck renting a 1 or 2 bedroom apartment. Often these come with washer and the extra room allowed us a little bit of space to recharge and unwind.

I'm just starting to research rooms in Rome and Venice and will keep you posted on any good finds. Ciao!

I agree that if you are comfortable doing self catering an apartment would be much more comfortable and more affordable, too.

My family of 5 spent 10 wonderful days in Italy in 2002. We had a great room in Rome at the Hotel Trastevere, Via Luciano Manara 24-25. The room was equipped with bunk beds for my 11 year old twins, a twin bed for my 14 year old, and a queen sized bed for my husband and I. The room also had a full sized refrigerator. It was very spacious and airy, and it overlooked a marketplace in the square. We enjoyed our stay very much.

We stayed in a family suite (4 of us) in ROme at the Santa CHiara hotel. Down the hall there was a family of 5 staying in a larger apartment type suite. I think they have 1 or 2 such suites.

Most hotels only have a handful of Romes for 4, so rooms for 5 will be a little tougher, although I think many would recommend to rooms. You should email any hotel you are intersted in and ask how they can accommodate 5.

sorry for the typo, I meant to say "rooms for 4" not "Romes for 4". I guess I have Rome on the mind....

Rent an apartment in Rome. Our family of 5 stayed at VRBO # 21717. I just checked and it's open all of Feb. except the 18-21st.

In Venice, we loved the Residence Corte Grimani. Think very very classy Embassy Suites. Lovely rooms - Great location. Just try to book ASAP.

Residenza Canali ai Coronari has connecting rooms that we stayed in. When I booked it, I asked for a quad room, but when we arrived it was actually 2 connecting rooms with a 2 baths so it was very nice.

Missypie,

May i ask what your rates were for your accomodation in Rome and Venice. We are experiencing a little bit of sticker shock. That said we've found a couple of apartments where the price almost seems too good to be true, so we're a little wary. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks!

The VRBO in Rome was 130 Euro per night. The Corte Grimani in Venice was 250 Euro per night. Remember when you're looking at those rates that it's for only one apartment. If you stay in a standard hotel, a family of 5 often has to book two rooms.

Missypie,
The price is right for the apartment you stayed in Rome. How was the location an accomodation in general?..Thanks

The location was fabulous...on the via dei Cappieleri (sp), a couple of blocks off the Campo die Fiori. The flat was not fancy but it was clean and there was plenty of room for the 5 of us. My only complaint is that the owner requires a deposit via Western Union, which has big fees, and then payment in cash of the balance upon arrival.
