We are a family of 4, visiting Rome for the first time for 4 nights in early July. We would like to rent accommodations with air-conditioning in a part of the city where we can walk to major sites and feel safe at night. Can you recommend something in the $150 - $200 per night price range? Thanks!!!

How old are the kids? I know you didn't ask for this suggestion, but how about an apartment?

One room with four people (esp. if the kids are older) and one bathroom is gonna be rough.

If I may, I suggest going to some website like VRBO or Holiday lettings, or similar and look for an apartment. You can do a search here for Italy.

We've done it a bunch (though not in Italy) and it is the only way I will travel now. And the price is often better than a large room or two rooms in a hotel.

You might also like to research b&bs, which can actually give you more privacy and be quite affordable.

danfang - You can find apartments rented for all different time periods. It just takes a bit of research. Many owners will cater to your needs.

For instance, I like this flat in London but it requires a 4-day minimum (we'll only be there 3 days). The owner was quite kind to negotiate a bit lower rate because I loved the place.

And, yes, your family will love you for giving everyone extra space!

There are many apartments in Rome available for 4 nights, however finding a two bath in your price range will be a little more difficult. Check out http://www.slowtrav.com/italy/vr/reviews.asp for apartment and agency recommendations. Are you willing to walk up several flights of stairs?

I'll second the suggestion of an apartment. Since we had kids it's the only way we travel now.

In Bath (UK) we stayed in a serviced apartment for 3 nights,and were very happy with the apartment and the organisation. The company was called SACO and they have apartments round the world, and often run special offers (we got our Bath deal on a special offer). They seem to have just one apartment complex in rome, and I don't know enough to know if the location is any good. Try looking up Rome on their website below.

The other websites suggested VRBO, Holiday Lettings are good, I also use Owners Direct. You are correct, some owners may want a week but others will give prices for a few nights. The only way to find out is to e-mail a few owners and see.

on one of our visits to rome, we stayed in the quad room at Due Torre. (280 euros in early july) the location was excellent, but i wouldn't call it spacious. we did enjoy our stay there, though..

they all had great reviews, A/C. and were 200 euro or less, although the third one did not seem very spacious

make sure you ask if the have TVs. that was important for our teens, who loved to watch italian soccer during down times.
