Dublin and Shannon, Where to stay and recommended day trips

Doing a trip in May. Will only be there for five full days. Do we need a car or can we get by without one? Any recommendations on where to stay in both locations? Any advice is welcome. Don't really know that much about Ireland and realize the time is limited. Thanks so much.

We stayed at Buswell's Hotel in Dublin. We found the location to be quite good for us. It is close to Grafton St., Trinity College and St. Stephen's Park. We walked every where we wante to go. The hotel is made up of 5 Georgian townhouses. Last May, it cost us 113 euros per night for a large queen size room. I booked it on the internet. We would definitely go back.

From Dublin I'd recommend a day trip to Newgrange - we had a car, but I'm sure there are coach trips organised that you could join for the day.
If you check out www.newgrange.com you'll get an inkling of what's in store; it's certainly something you don't come across in many other parts of the world! Di

Are you flying into Dublin and out of Shannon? I would spend 2 of your 5 days in Dublin and the remaining 3 days near, but not in Shannon. Ennis might be a good choice since it would give you close access to the fabulous sites in County Clare (e.g. the Burren, the cliffs in Kilkee, etc.) and Galway is only an hour away.

I second Newgrange and Buswells Hotel. Great location and quiet at night.
