Driving Route, Mid-Stop, Amsterdam to Munich

Hi All. Will be driving from Amsterdam to Munich in mid-September. Need to cover the roughly 550 miles over two days. Reason for driving was just to mix it up (as opposed to trains, planes) and take in the sights.

So two questions. Any suggestions on routes that you'd consider "must do's" that are more or less direct? And, is there a good "halfway" overnight stopping point I should think about?

I know there was some construction on the A2 route last year that took you south to Luxembourg then over to Munich. Also, not afraid to take in some of the sights at 130mph via an autobahn going the German route. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Too many options.
The "ideal" route goes via Utrecht, Arnhem, Düsseldorf, Cologne, Frankfurt, Würzburg, Nürnberg to Munich.
You could overnight in Mainz if you want to stay close to the most direct route.
Or in some "quaint" village on the Rhine, Luxembourg city, or Heidelberg if you were willing to veer off the shortest route for some kms.

From Cowboy's list I would emphasize a Rhine location for the overnight stop, like maybe Boppard or St. Goar - barely over 400 km. You'll get there for lunch, in plenty of time to take a boat down the Rhine (timetables at www.k-d.com) and back up by local train to complete the afternoon/evening enjoyment.

The next day you can make a two-hour stop in Heidelberg (park down by the train station and take the tram up to Bismarckplatz where the old town begins), another stop comfortably in Ulm (details at http://tourismus.ulm.de), and still get to Munich for dinner. Total just over 500 km.

@Cowboy - That's the problem . Never been to that part of the EU before and on a map, one road looks more or less like another. Thanks for the suggestions. I was considering Heidelberg too for the historical "survived the war intact" aspect and the drive through the gorge on the way.

@Dalai - Thanks for the validation on the Heidelberg aspect and for the tip on the boat and the tram!
