DOES ANYONE KNOW - Cost of cab from Sorrento to Positano?

Hi,
What's the best way to get from Sorrento to Positano? Cab or private driver? What's the cost difference?

If anyone has used a private driver, could you pass on their name/phone and webb address

How long is that ride anyways? When you look at a map it seems like it is only a 1/2 hour ride. I wonder how wrong I am

I do have one other question, If I take the Eurostar from Rome to Naples, should I take the commuter train from Naples to Sorrento? OR does anyone have a better suggestions. The sound of a commuter train seems like it would stop at every stop and take forever

Thanks for all your input

I dno't think the Circumvesviana train to Sorrento is more than a half hour or so. You can, BTW, catch the Sita bus from the Sorrento train station to Positano for a buck or so. Its probabably a half hour ride.

The cost of a cab between Sorrento and Positano runs about $40. The name of the wonderful driver we've used for both trips to the Amalfi Coast ( pickup from FCO in Rome, tours to Pompeii, etc.) is: Giovanni Gargiulo. He can be reached at: Tourofitaly.com or on his cell at: 3387306575. And yes, without too much traffic, the ride should be about half an hour.

By the way, another option for getting from Sorrento to Positano is taking the ferry from the port in Sorrento, although there may be schedule changes depending on season ( summer vs fall). It's a great way to avoid the horrible traffic on the coast in the summer.

If you have any other questions, just post again. We were in Sorrento and Positano this July.

Good luck!

We are heading to Positano for Christmas and New Years, can someone suggest the best way to get there from Rome? We are currently planning on renting a car to facilitate day trips from Positano. Are buses/trains a better bet?
Thanks

I agree with Weadles that the cab fare between Sorrento and Positano is about $40, and time is about 20 to 30 minutes....and very enjoyable because the scenery is so gorgeous. For us, this was far more preferable than the bus (with luggage etc.) and the hairpin turns. Our driver was very pleasant and informative. (Sorry, I don't have his info.)

The commuter train from Naples to Sorrento is definitely longer than a half hour. I don't recall exactly, but I want to say an hour plus. It does stop frequently, because it is a commuter train. That being said, we didn't mind it, and we stood the whole way. It was a convenient way to get from point A to point B and see some scenery along the way for a reasonable price.

The best way to get from Rome to Positano? I don't know if it's the best way, but we took the train from Rome to Naples, the commuter train from Naples to Sorrento, and a cab from Sorrento to Positano. It worked for us (we stayed a few nights in Sorrento, which I highly recommend). Other posters may be able to comment if it's the best way or not. You may have to weigh cost vs. convenience vs. time spent travelling vs. how much luggage are you going to bring.

Hope that helps.

Hi

You can also hire a driver from Naples to Positano - about $90.

We are using Cuomo Renato. www.cuomonet.it

Hey ~ thanks for all your good input.

Weadles, that ferry sounds interesting.
Have you ever used it before? I wonder how much it cost and how long it takes ?Once you get to Positano harbor are there cabs available to take you to your hotel?

Is there a faster train with less stops to go from Naples to Sorrento besides using the commuter train?

Cemcem,

As I remember it, the ferry was very cheap, but I don't recall the exact price. Anybody else? The ride is about 40 minutes.

Positano doesn't have a port like Sorrento. And the main road through the center of town doesn't go down to the dock, so there are no cabs to meet the boats. If you call ahead, your hotel will probably arrange for a porter to meet your boat and take your luggage on a small handtruck back to the hotel. Once you see the tiny alleys that pass for "streets" in Positano, you'll understand why this is necessary.

Quite honestly, if you're not going in the summer months, and it's within your budget, I'd recommend a driver from Naples. With luggage, it will be much less of a hassle, and if you don't have to do the driving, you'll be able to actually enjoy the spectacular scenery of the coast.

Hi cemcem,

The circumvesuviana is the only train. There is a bus, but it takes longer.

Hi ira,
I'll probably take the circumvesuviana verses the bus system. Do you happen to know how often this train runs - is it often? And do you need a reserved ticket? I'm assuming not .
If I take the circumvesuviana from Naples to Sorrento, how lon of a ride should I count on? Thanks again

Another vote for taking a cab from Naples to Positano! I can't imagine (in retrospect) getting to our hotel in Positano from the SITA bus stop with our luggage, etc.

Hi ira,
I visited the "CV" web site and it's all in Italian. Am I missing something? It seems like it was asking to punch in the time I want to leave the Naples station, of course I don't know that yet because I haven't reserved the ES ticket from Rome yet and I don't know how long that would take. Then I think it asked what time I want to arrive in Sorrento? But I don't know how long the CV takes from Naples to Sorrento.

I'm sure I missed the button to have that site come up in English - didn't I ?

If you are daytripping I would reco taking the bus. Sit on left side going and right side coming back. Some on this forum say it is scary, however I don't recall hearing about any buses going over the edge. The view from the bus is worthwhile. You can always (most of the time) take the ferry back.

A car with four people and luggage cost us 30E inclding a tip.

When we visited, our friends drove a back route (not scenic) and it took less than 15 minutes.

The Circumvesuviana from Naples to Sorrento takes about an hour. There are at least two trains per hour and more frequently during peak commuter times. There is a slight reduction in the number of trains per day in the off-season. Finally, there are a few trains during the day that are direct and make fewer stops. The train makes 25 quick stops between Naples and Sorrento. You cannot buy the tickets in advance, and the price is just a few Euros per person.

The ferry between Sorrento and Positano is seasonal and does not operate during times of rough water. (You might not find that out until you got to the ferry dock.) In October 2002, service ended on October 15th.

If you take the train to Sorrento, the bus connection is at the train station. If you want to take the ferry, you'll have to cab or take the city bus from the train station to the ferry dock. I'm guessing that cab fare could be almost 10 Euros or more because of the baggage charges. The bus to the ferry would be just a couple of Euros.

If your budget allows, a cab or driver from Naples would be fastest and most comfortable, but you could save some money by training to Sorrento and then taking a cab.
