What are some good daytrips (within 1.5-2 hours, preferably by public transit, but renting a car for a day would also be an option) from Munich that get you to an area with beautiful mountain scenery (with lakes is a plus!) and preferably has good hiking trails?

I've been to Salzburg and to Fussen on a past trip and would prefer something new.

Hi k_traveler,

I recommend either Mittenwald (2h) or Garmisch-Partenkirchen (1h30) for your day. Mittenwald is smaller and closer to the mountains and mountain trails -- plus it is a super pretty little town and also offers the violin-making museum. Garmisch-Partenkirchen is larger, offers a good-sized pedestrian zone with shops and cafes, and nice walks nearby.

What kind of walks are you looking for? Challenging, with some altitude gain? Or flat?

Great suggestsions by swandav2000. One other I've done is Oberammergau, which is quite pretty, with frescoes on the buildings, like Mittenwald. We didn't go up into the Alps while there, so I'm not sure how easy it is to get from the town up into the mountains. But we did take a chair ride up into the hills opposite the Alps, and had a really nice hike back down. Mittenwald, Garmisch/P, and Oberammergau are all accessible via train from Munich.

Another possibility, not so far away, is Ammersee which is a very nice lake in Hersching southwest of Munich, accessible via S-bahn. You can take a nice ferry ride on the lake, to a little town on the other side, and/or hike up to the Andechs Monastery above town. The monks there brew some very good beer.

swandav2000 - challenging hikes up the mountain are preferred We're active and in our mid twenties, so as long as the hike isn't so steep that we'd need special equipment, we're game!

Mittenwald, Garmisch, and Oberammergau all look very nice. Ammersee looks like its still a ways away from the mountains. How is the Berchtesgaden area for a day trip? Pictures of Lake Königssee look stunning!

Another easy trip is by Bayerische Oberlandbahn (BOB) railways to Bayrischzell , Schliersee or Tegernsee.
From Bayrischzell or Schliersee stations you have access to hundreds of kms of trails - easy or strenous.

Hi again,

There is a gorgeous walk from Mittenwald up the Kranzberg that takes about 2h; you walk by some lakes, then go up the mountain. The best part is the restaurant St Anton at the top, which is one of my favorite restaurants in the area. You can either take the ski lift down or walk down (about 45 minutes).

Another sorta easy hike would be up the Kramer mountain in Garmisch to the St Martins Hütte, should be about 1h30, but I've never done it.

If you want something challenging, you can climb up the Kreuzeck, which takes about 3h, and you have a big restaurant at the top. You can take the cable car down.

I second swandav's suggestions (as usual), but also Cowboy's vote for Tegernsee. The latter would be a larger lake, with very nice small towns and lots of hiking options. Have a look at http://en.tegernsee.com/ and click on "Activities"!
