Como to Sorrento
In April/14, we are traveling from Lake Como and want to head to Amalfi Coast, with perhaps an interim stop in Assisi or other interesting cultural stop before spending a few days on the Coast.. We all have been several times to Florence, Siena, Pisa,Naples, and Pompeii. We are seeking beautiful vistas and the highlights of the area in Amalfi area. We would have 5 days but must be back in Rome on the sixth day... Any suggested trains, stops, or driving routes that would have us culturally, and comfortably, within that range and timeframe? your insight would be so welcome.. What will weather be like?? Any great place to base ourselves in the coastal area to do Positano, Sorrento Ravello and other stops? We want a scenic home from which to explore then maybe a fast return to Rome via Naples and the train...thanks!

My favorite hotel in Positano is Hotel Poseidon, but also look at Bucca di Bacco, Palazzo Murat, and Hotel Marincanto. If you would be interested in apartment style living, look at VILLA LE SIRENE.
I'm not sure about the boat schedule in the spring months. In the summer, there are boats between Positano and Amalfi. From Amalfi, you can take a bus or taxi up to Ravello.
In the opposite direction during the summer months, there are boats between Positano and Sorrento. It takes about 30 minutes. The drive between Positano and Naples is about 1.5 hours. You could either take a boat or bus to Sorrento, depending on seasonal schedules, then the local train to Naples, or arrange a private transfer to Naples from your hotel in Positano.
BTW, the reason I'm encouraging Positano as a base is because it's much more dramatically beautiful and charming than Sorrento. And since you have no interest in visiting Pompeii, there's really no need for you to base in Sorrento, anyway.

WWK, love the Positano suggestion as a base. It has long been a desired destination...how many days out of Positano would you recommend? Any restaurants? A boat trip sounds great...Weather in April? And it will be just prior to Easter, so special events? Though we have all done Pompeii, a return is not out of the question.
Jean, we are not trying to get from Como in a day, but want to sightsee along the way...staying a night or even two in a mid-destination spot if a special place is found. Assisi was one suggestion, Ravenna another. We only would be on a direct return on the last of our 6 from the south.
