Can I use the Carte Orange for zones 1-2 (16.30&euro to go to Chartres (via RER)? Last time, we could use it to Versailles so it should be OK for Chartres since it's closer to Paris?

Absolutely not

Chartres lies well outside the coverage of the Carte Orange (aka Navigo now perhaps) coverage. You will need to buy a train ticket - www.voyages-sncf.com for schedules and prices.

RER does not go anywhere near Chartres - it's only in the Ile de France - Paris region and Chartres is not even close to being in the coverage.

Versailles is in Zone 4, so you were in violation if you only had a pass for zones 1-2.

And since there are turnstiles at Versailles RER C station that you must insert your Carte Orange or ticket in how did you get out of the station there as only tickets valid for zones 1-4 should open the gates?

I think you may not realize where Chartres is and maybe need to check a map. Chartres is about 5 times farther away from Paris as Versailles. Zones 1-2 are just Paris itself (I think about the peripherique). Chartres is about 60 miles from Paris. Versailles is about 10-12 miles, I think.

I also wonder how you could have used a zone1-2 card to go to Versailles, that isn't possible, unless you jumped a turnstile to get out. (I suppose maybe something could have been broken and let you out, but I don't think you'd get back in on return at Versailles).

I thought we used our Carte Orange for Versailles but maybe not. This was back in 2004. Tickets must have been cheap since I don't remember.

Anyhow, thanks for the clarification that I'll need to purchase a separate ticket for Chartres.

What I'm trying to figure out is that we arrive Paris on a Wed (Thalys from Brussels to Gare Nord) and return to Brussles the following Thu. We will take side trips to Chartres and Reims. We are staying in 6th. So would it make sense still to buy a Carte Orange, considering I'll need 2 different passes and day trips in between.

Last time, the pass for 9e for the week so it was a no brainer. This time, it's 16e and there are 4 of us. On the other hand, I love the freedom of having a pass and just hop on whenever/wherever.

does not 16 euro mean 16 metro or bus or tram trips if carnets are about 1 euro a ticket?

plan to ride 32 times ?- or even close then i'd go for the ease of the C Orange. Or do one Carte Orange and one carnet you can share?

do the day trips to Chartres and Reims on a portion of your Paris stay that you do not buy a C Orange as you won't be taking the metro probably more than twice that day?

You would need one Carte Orange for Wednesday-Sunday and another one for Monday-Thursday. If you were limiting your time to Paris, you might take enough rides to make the passes pay off, even though you won't get a full week's use out of either of them. However, on the days you go to Chartres and Reims a pass won't do you much good.

It might be better to buy 10-ticket carnets as needed and share the tickets with your travel partner(s). A single ticket is now good for bus transfers made within 90 minutes of first boarding a bus. However, you still cannot use a single ticket to transfer between Metro and bus. On any given day that you know you will be taking a lot of rides, you could buy a one-day Mobilis pass for zones 1-2 for 5.60€.
