Best way to see Amalfi Coast??
I will be in Sorrento for several days this month before heading down to Sicily. My plan for my last day in Sorrento is to make my way down the Amalfi coast, stopping to explore several towns. I'll end up in Salerno where I will catch an 11pm night train to Sicily. My question is which would be better: taking the bus and stopping at towns along the way or going by boat (ferry) and stopping along the way? Also is there much to do or see in Salerno or should I arrive just in time for the train? Any restaurant suggestions for lunch or dinner?

Hi gran,
Much depends on the amount of luggage you will have.
The SITA buses have luggage storage underneath.
The ferry is roomy enough for you to keep your luggage with you.
Assuming little or no luggage, I would take the bus and stop in Positano and Amalfi and not bother with sightseeing in Salerno.
The view from the water is also very nice. You can do the same trip, but the last ferries are somewhat earlier than the last buses.

It won't be easy to visit places if you have your luggage in tow. I think you will need to check your luggage in Salerno(if they have a left luggage) and then you can ferry or bus somewhere (Amalfi, Ravello). Another option would be an overnight ferry.

Thanks for the info
Ira - We will each have one small duffle bag. If we take the bus to Positano and then Amalfi, is there anywhere at each of these places where we could store our bags while we look around? I guess we could go to Salerno first like kybourbon said, store our bags and then back track to Amalfi and Positano. I'm not sure of the time distances between all these towns to know if this is possible. Maybe it would be possible to hire a driver for the day to take us to Positano and then Amalfi? Its looking like I may have to change my plans for this day. We are leaving in 4 days. I'll do a search for Amalfi drivers. Thanks for your input.

Hi gran,
I'm afraid I can't help with where to put your duffle bags.
I saw no "left luggage" in Positano or Amalfi.
How about this:
Leave luggage at Sorrento hotel. Take bus to Positano (about 1 hr) and return. Get luggage.
Take ferry to Salerno,Approx schedule is
11.00 - 14.30 - 17.00 - 17.25

Message: WWW.metrodelmare.com and WWW.coopsantandrea.com are the main boat services between Salerno & Amalfi
You can drop off luggage at Salerno train station and bus or ferry to Amalfi and return.
You might also consider taking te train from Salerno to Paestum (ancient Greek ruins).
If you decide to use a driver, I can recommend Renato Cuomo

Granbury - Metro del Mare is the hydrofoil service.
The ferry service is Coop Sant'Andrea/ TraVelMar.
I'd recommend the ferry rather than the hydrofoil. The ferry docks at Piazza della Concordia jetty in Salerno - this is very convenient for the station.
The hydrofoil docks at Molo Manfredi which is some distance from the station.
Hope this helps ...
Steve
P.S. For luggage storage in Positano I suggest you ask at the Coop Sant'Andrea kiosk at the jetty. Offer a tip and I expect they'll oblige - I'm sure they deal with this problem all the time.
If not, the Tourist Info Office is 100m away - ask there. Or the nearest bar.
You could try the same in Amalfi.
I often have this problem. There is always a solution - just ask.
Always offer a tip.

Great info! You guys are the best!
Ira - I sent a request to Renato for a quote.
Steve - The ferry info was just what I was looking for. I feel sure I could find a place for the duffles. I am really leaning towards the ferry option. I'll wait until I get there to make up my mind. But I least I know my options.
Thanks for all your help. Did I mention that we leave in 4 days!!
