Amalfi Coast logistics...??!!
We are planning to book a private compartment on the overnight train from Salerno to La Spezia on Friday night, May 20th. I believe it departs Salerno close to midnight. We will be staying in Positano at Alergo California for a few nights prior to this... so we will be coming from Positano.
Does anyone have any suggestions for how we should get from Positano to Salerno that late in the evening? I'm assuming that the busses stop running at some point... so I am also open to any suggestions for what to do in Salerno if we are stuck there several hours early for our train, lugagge in tow!
We had considered a flight out of Naples, but we wouldn't have gained any time since we could have had to fly to Genoa or Milan and then catch more trains to the CT area, all during the daytime of course... hence the overnight train plan (we don't have to miss a full day of our trip on traveling).
Also, I know it seems odd to go from the AC to the CT, but we spent a few days there on our honeymoon and want to return for sentimental reasons (obviously, not for practical reasons, LOL!).
Many Thanks,
Jill

Hi, busses won't be running that late but if you catch one of the last to leave Positano you wont have too long of a wait in Salerno. If it is a nice evening there is a nice promenade along the beach with benches where you can wait (it is a few blocks from the station). There is a nice pedestrian area too where you can sit or go to a cafe. If you are over loaded with luggage you might be able to leave it in the station, I don't know about that.
If you miss the last bus from Positano you will have to take a cab.

Thanks peeky.
We don't carry a lot of luggage (one large backpack, and one suitcase just small enough to be a carry on), but I'd certainly want to leave it somewhere if we end up in Salerno more than an hour early (and I'm sure we probably will!).
Great to know there is something to do there though, thanks again!
Anyone have any idea of the cost of a private driver or cab from Positano to Salerno?

Thanks so much ira. I navigated to the sita sight on my own, but got lost from there...
When you were looking at the schedules, how did you know which "quadro" to print? I see Amalfi, Positano, Salerno on several of them.
Also, any idea if these schedules hold true for mid-May? I don't believe that we're going during the high-season.

Hi TA,
I knew that you wanted to go from Positano to Salerno.
I observed that there was a bus from Amalfi to Salerno that did not go to Napoli. (quadro 15)
I observed that there was a bus from Sorrento to Amalfi via Positano. (Quadro 14)
I deduced that you wanted the no. 14 from Positano to Amalfi and the no. 15 from Amalfi to Salerno.

Ah Bob, but the bus is so much more fun... Note though, that the bus doesn't terminate at the station at Salerno in fact you have to walk a couple of blocks.
Last year my family (wife and 4 kids) travelled by bus from Salerno to Amalfi and back again. The outbound leg was easy enough. We got off at the station, walked out to the bus stop and caught the bus. Of course we assumed the return leg would take us back to the station. We were happily daydreaming on the bus waiting to get to the train station when the bus pulled up and (apparently) the driver called out to us that this was the stop for the station. Well, we continued chatting among ourselves, wondering what the hold up was. It wasn't until virtually the whole bus was calling out 'station' that we realised that WE were the holdup. Thank god the bus driver was kind enough to stop for us.
One of many adventures travelling around Europe with 4 children, as you can imagine.
