It may sound expensive, but it is well worth it. I got this tip from a travel board friend and we found this guy to be TERRIFIC. Just what a tired, ready to NOT be traveling and get to the hotel ASAP, tourist needs!
Emanuele Fiorelli. His cell phone is +39 389 5106 334
email: [email protected] (we arranged with him by email a couple weeks before we left home)
Reason to ride with Emanuele - he will take you for the same price prescribed by law for the taxis, but he has an excellent vehicle, speaks very good English, and you feel great seeing your name on the board of someone when you get out of baggage pickup!
They all (taxis and private drivers) should take you for the same price. It IS the law!

It is beyond me why you would pay for a crowded, dirty train with pick pockets that dumps you a good :10 walk from the terminal and any taxi and then pay a taxi 15 to 20E to the hotel. The cost is about the same but the comfort is so much better.

bobthenavigator,
Our experience with the train was very pleasant--clean, not crowded at all and the hotel was not that far from Termini. I accept that in some cases it will not be worth it. It was 10 years ago so I don't remember how much it cost but it was the guidebook suggestion. That said, we have took a cab, too, a few years ago, from the hotel to the airport and it was nice, too.

bob, in my experience, the Leonardo Express was neither crowded nor dirty. It also never got stuck in any traffic jams.
If you can't walk 100 feet from train exit to taxi stand, I am wondering if you realize that Rome is a walking city.
I've never paid more than E10 for a ride from Termini to my rentals, all in city center.
Just my two cents. I like the train. But then, I travel light.

Gosh, I never had those issues on the Leonardo Express, either, and I've taken it a few times. It was clean and fast and I didn't encounter any beggars, just hordes on priests who wanted to practice their English with me. Yes, it's a bit of a walk when you get off to get to inside Termini, but Rome's all about walking for me, anyway.

The train is now 14e I believe?
If so, a 'We' is 28e and 2 bags in the taxi's trunk ~2e, so 30e plus the taxi fare.
Plus a 0-30min wait for the train and a 30min trip.
vs.
~45e for door-to-door service.
I stayed 8x just a 'stone's throw' from Termini and Loved the train for that reason and the price as a single traveller.
But if I was a 'we' staying in the historic center I would opt for a taxi or limo for just a few euro more esp after being up for ~24hrs.
Regards, Walter

How many of you are there? How much luggage do you have How near/far is your hotel form the train station? How much do you value cost versus convenience - esp after a long flight.
We always just grab a (official) cab and have never had a problem.

>>>,another say better a bus<<<
The shuttles buses are the cheapest option and more comfortable than the Leonardo. I've never seen any pick pocket attempts on the Leonardo and they do have some new trains (ordered).
Terravision shuttle bus is the cheapest (4€). SitBus is 8€.

Airport Shuttle listed above is a shared transport so you may dropping off other at various locations/hotels. If you don't want a tour of Rome hotels, spend a few € more for your own private shuttle. Rome Shuttle Limousine is 40€ for up the three people including luggage.

>>>I think Fiumicino taxis can charge what they like.<<<
That used to be a set fee of 60€, but it's no problem finding a Comune Roma taxi at the airport.
