B&B in Mizen Head Peninsula, West Cork

We plan to spend three days in the West Cork area.

I have heard that the Mizen Head Peninsula is wonderful. Can anyone recommend a good B&B in the area?

Also, can someone recommend a good place the night before a morning flight out of Shannon Airport?

Hi lardeb:

I stayed at the Galley Cove house and liked it. It is a short walk or shorter drive into Crookhaven which is the classic tiny Irish fishing port. http://www.galleycovehouse.com/

Here is a link to my journal where I describe my time in the area.

Have fun!

On your last night you can't go wrong staying in Bunratty, which is about a 15 minute drive to the airport. There are a few hotels and many wonderful B&B's from which to choose. Do a search here on Bunratty B&Bs for some ideas. I have two favorites, Park House and Ashgrove, both on the low road between the castle and Durty Nellie's.

If you can get into Galley Cove, go for it. It's right there in Crookhaven. Crookhaven Inn for a reasonable dinner, and O'Sullivan's for a couple of pints.

We stayed at the Heren Cove B&B in Golen -- it was really "worn."

HappyCheesehead stayed at Fortview which is only a few miles from Crookhaven and commented that is one of the better B&B's they stayed at in their 2-weeks in Ireland.

Bunratty -- We were very happy with the Bunratty Lodge, and I would highly recommend it.

I stayed at Galley Cove House. The rooms in the older wing are small and worn. The rooms in the new wing on the ground floor are larger. The upstairs rooms in the new wing are very small and the shower was miniscule. I had the small room with the tiny shower upstairs. All rooms were neat and clean. Breakfast was fine but the dining room was cold. It is fine for a short stay but I really liked the looks of Fortview House, which I visited the next day.

Absolutely beware of the Heronīs Cove B&B! We had reservations there and refused to stay. The rooms had a strange smell and looked very worn. We were lucky to get rooms at the Fortview House instead which I would highly recommend. The breakfast was amazing, the owners friendly and the rooms beautifully decorated.

Lardeb, I am so glad you asked this question! I was going to sing the praises of this B&B in the fabulous trip report I planned on writing after our May 04 Ireland trip. I hang my head in shame for not ever actually writing that trip report.

Stay at the Fortview House B&B - FOR SURE!

Violet was an absolutely darling hostess and the B&B was so clean and comfortable. It is a farmhouse B&B ,and therefore, located on the farm. It was on a bit of a side road out in the country, but quite easy to find. We stayed in the the room pictured in their website:

http://www.fortviewhousegoleen.com/

It was a shame we were only staying for the one night, I would have liked to been there longer. By chance we were the only guests there that evening and as my husband carried our suitcase out the next morning he came back in laughing. He had walked past the breakfast room, Violet had already loaded the table with more food than the two of us could eat in 4 breakfasts, and the hot stuff was still to come! We sat in the breakfast room (so pretty and cozy) and looked out into her back yard and watched the farm cats watch the chickens and snooze in the sun.

Violet showed us a nice drive up to the Mizen Head and we spent a terrific morning with the Budman's drinking in the fabulous view (much as we had spent the night before indulging in a different type of drink{insert cute emoticon here that I don't quite know how to do}).

Loved this place! (and this concludes my trip report)

The Fortview looks nice. It's also E40-45 pp. Looks like the prices are going up as the dollar is falling.
