Barcelona & Venice Hotel
We will be in Barcelona and Venice for one night each. We will only be in the hotel to shower and sleep. Since we are not really going to enjoy(utilize) the amenities offered, staying in a 4 or 5 star and spending major Euro would be a waste. We are looking for a hotel that is safe, clean and confortable that is moderate in price.
Barcelona should be within "walking distance" to Las Ramblas and Venice Piazzo San Marcos.
Any recommendations especially from those who may have been in similar circumstances would be appreciated.

To answer your question, I would like to spend about $125 to $150.
What I was trying to express in the OP is that we don't want to buy a Mercedes since a Honda Accord would be good enough. Something like LaQuinta/Hampton Inns would be fine and not a Hyatt/Crown Plaza/W Hotels. We figure that we would be sightseeing and would return to our hotel around 11pm/midnight and checkout early the next morning. So we just need it to sleep and shower. But at the same time we don't want a dump and our luggage stolen.

You might look into the Regencia Colon in Barcelona..a three-star alternative to its 4* sister the Colon nearby. Close to Las Ramblas, in the Gothic Quarter. You might even try getting it through one of the many discount sites and pay even less.

As a further alternative go to www.hotelsearch.com which lists hotels only in Spain..you may find something there, too.

We stayed at Hotel Continental in Barecelona in March of 03. Great location on La Ramblas, nice buffet that was out at all hours (for snacks), nice people---but we had a SMALL room. I'd stay there again but I'd ask in advance for a bigger room with a better view. But we loved the location.
In Venice I wanted to stay on The Grand Canal and it was EXPENSIVE. So don't stay there if you're looking to save money.

Priceline is not necessarily a good bet for Barcelona and Venice, but if you do use it, be extremely careful with the zones (particularly in Barcelona). Priceline is without question an excellent deal in London and several German and Eastern European cities, but the savings are not as great elsewhere in Europe.
