We stayed at a hostAl, yes, with an A. They are small hotels run by a family, usually. They are usually clean and cheap. Here is a discussion on them. http://www.barcelona-tourist-guide.c...na-hostal.html
We used HostalHill. It was fine with us. Clean and neat. No AC, that was a drawback somewhat. We had to leave the window open and there was a lot of street noise. You might want to ask for a room in the back. They had a "portable AC" for some rooms. Those rooms cost more. Our room had shower and wash basin but no toilet. Had to go down the hall for that.
Elevator was really interesting. Looked like it came from France around 1850.
Paid around 60E per night, which included a chit for a bagel and coffee at a rest. across the street for the both of us. Subway was close by. Local bus was 3 or 4 blocks. The Tourista bus was a 12-15 block walk. I would recommend it. Buy the two day ticket.

We've stayed in three different hotels in Venice - Bisanzio, Locando Orseole, and Abadessa. While the first two were lovely, Hotel Abadessa was beyond compare. Location, setting, garden, breakfast, complimentary aperitif, staff. If - no, when - I return to Venice that would be my only choice.
