Avignon Hotel

I will be in Avignon with my wife in mid-June 2012.

We will be based there for 7-8 days doing daystrips on 5-6 days by train and/or bus.

So we'd like a location in the central area but convenient to the train and bus stations.

While luxury is not important we'd like a clean hotel with private bathroom facilities.

Hopefully in the 125E to 150E range.

Any suggestions. Thanks.

I really like the Hotel du Palais des Papes, www.hotel-avignon.com

It's slightly funky but the superior rooms are good and well within your budget.

The hotel faces the palais across the square. What I can't tell you is how easy it is to get to the local station or the tgv station as we didn't use Avignon for a base, just stayed there for two nights. Both I know are easy to reach by bus, the local station may be walkable.

Cathinjoetown,

I think I want something closer to the train and bus stations.

Has anybody stayed at the Bristol? I've seen it mentioned a few times.

I haven't stayed there, but probably will the next time I stay in Avignon, as I really like its location, and it appears nice enough from the website and outside. It's a 3* hotel, I think, how bad can it be. Avignon isn't full of wonderful hotels IMO

If you don't have to have quaint, there is a Mercure in the same square with modern rooms and an excellent breakfast buffet. It was good value when we stayed there several years ago. Think the French equivalent of a Marriott Couryard or a Hampton Inn with better breakfast, mostly business travelers.

Myer, neither of these hotels is far from transportation. They are an easy walk to the SNCF station just outside the city walls, they are near the Palais, and the streets between them and the station are filled with excellent shopping.

I stayed at the Hotel Colbert in April, on a quiet pedestrian street near the bus and train but inside the walls and well within your budget: http://www.lecolbert-hotel.com/

joannay,
Hotel Colbert doesn't have an elevator.

Ackislander,
I can't find a Mercure in that area. There seems to be two but quite a bit further.

Myer, but they do have ground floor rooms. I stayed in one on the back patio.

There are indeed two Mercures, one on the Place de l´Horloge and another just around the corner. However, central Avignon has several excellent hotels, the Mirande or the Hotel d´Europe for example.

My favorite hotel is the Hotel d´Europe:

Here is information for all of the central Avignon hotels:

I'm not sure what square Ackislander is referring to, but I assume the one right in the center near the Palais des Papes. http://www.mercure.com/fr/hotel-1952...es/index.shtml

That isn't a real far distance if you are doing day trips by train or something, but I personally would rather be closer to the train station than the center square if the intention is to walk to/from with trip luggage for your stay. I think it is over 1 km.

It is called the Cite des Papes and is virtually across the street. The others are near the Pont and in that direction.

joannay,
The Colbert is missing a few of the days we would need.

However, that area looks like a good compromise for what we want.

Thanks.

Hmmmm. A 4 star hotel for under 100E per night. How about 260E per night for a standard room.

At the bottom end of your price range, the Ibis a block from the city-centre train station is part of a huge chain, Accor, which includes the Mercure mentioned in an earlier post. All the Ibis hotels are exactly the same, resembling the original Holiday Inn concept except it can still make the formula of reliability work. Usually good value but don't expect atmosphere. It's at 42 Boulevard Saint-Roch and, booked well in advance, will run about 55 euro. Nearby, at 20 Boulevard Saint-Roch, Accor is opening a Novotel, posher at a little over 100 euro. Both are an easy stroll into the centre of the old city. www.accorhotels.com
