a day trip from Munich ?

We have five full days in Munich first week in Sept.
It is our first visit to the city.
We are "lazy" travelers..i.e. no running from place to place , making
many day trips in a short time , or driving around.
Our interest is history, art, architecture.... mixed wit a few pints now and then.
Nuremberg?

The Residenz...right in town

Charlottenburg Palace..also right in town

Interested in Dachau by any chance?

Any particular architecture types? I'll be in Nurnberg in a couple weeks so I can understand your interest but there's plenty to see and do closer to Munich

thanks Dukey.
Yes, we will visit Dachau... I think it is only a 20 minutes
or so by train from Munich.

Museums, historical sights, galleries...are always of interest to us.( more so than castles and palaces)

You shouldn't miss the "Deutsches Museum", the old Pinakothek, maybe Nymphenburg, the "Seehaus" and "Chinesischer Turm" for beer, the Isar at Thalkirchen, the Flaucher, Sendling and Schwabing, horse races at Riem, The Nationaltheater, Gasteig and ....

thanks again. There is always more to see in a big city and around it than one has the time to do.
leaves something for the next time....

We loved visiting Nuremberg as a daytrip from Munich, went to the Nazi Party Rally Grounds in the morning and spend the late afternoon/evening in older downtown. The city has some great history! They also have really amazing Nuremberger sausages

I'd second seeing the Deutsches Museum as logos recommended. It's comparable to the US Smithsonian and was a highlight of our last trip to Germany.

danon,

It appears you have already answered the question in you OP subject title or are you asking for ideas for a SECOND day trip for your five day visit?

BTW, When you are in Dachau, consider visiting the actual town along with the Concentration Camp Memorial Site.

Floriano Brunnen is a wonderful restaurant very close to the main square/cathedral in Dachau - highly recommended.

Places to go in Munich:

Bavarian National Museum - Wow!

Andescher am Dom (Weinstraße 7a - http://www.andechser-am-dom.de/ ) Features beer from the Andechs Monastery – “the best beer in the world” GREAT!

Café Luitpold http://www.cafe-luitpold.de/ Not just the pastries - the restaurant is great too.

Bier and Oktoberfest Museum http://www.bier-und-oktoberfestmuseum.de/
Excellent cheap food and beer too.

Munich City Museum

The Royal Hofgarten

Places to skip in Munich: Hofbrauhaus (much better food and beer elsewhere, it's overpriced to boot).

With an interest in architecture, you might consider a quick trip to Ulm to see the minster.

bardo, I was thinking about spending half a day or less in Dachau considering it is so close to Munich.
