Staying in Harbour Island, Where to Day Trip?

I'm staying on Harbour Island but Eleuthera sounds beautiful. Should I arrange a day trip to visit the beaches? Is renting a car easy? Or is there a trip around the island that we should book? I'd prefer to rent a car and explore, but if there is a not-to-miss guide, I'd do that.

What about snorkel trips off Harbour Island? Any other day trips you'd recommend?

Thanks!
Lynne

Definately take a day and visit Eleuthera. Don't think there any tour guides around the island. A car rental should be relatively easy. One of my favorite beaches is Club med beach in gov harbour. There are many other beaches you could explore along the way. Here is a great website that describes beaches by location and provides directions, pictures etc

If you are flying into N. Eleuthera, find a cab driver Wendell, tell him Gail Tweedy sent you and ask for a tour of the island or arrange to come back over to Eleuthera, he will pick you up at the dock and take you to see the N. end of the island, if you want, or will drop you off at a beach and pick you up later.

Or when you get to Harbour Island, find Reggie (cab driver) and tell him you want a car on Eleuthera for the day and he will tell you how to set it up (also tell him Gail sends love).

There is a book (check Amazon) for the Hidden Beaches of Eleuthera, that you might buy before you go, although you can probably find it on island. There are several beaches on the windward side that are spectacular.

You might enjoy a drive down Queens HIghway (the only main road on island to Glass Window, which is a brige that connects the N to the S southern end of the island. This is where the east side of the island ATlantic and the leeward side meet in DRAMATIC colours. I was drove down and actually stopped right ON the bridge for over an hour (i'ts only 1 lane) and took pictures, and there was NO traffic at all.

Further down the island at Govenours Harbour is the only stop light on island and further south at Tarpun Bay is an artist colony sort of, and a castle built by Lord McMillan Hughes, (passed away not long ago) was a local colourful celebrity who built the castle by hand. There are also a couple of good restaurants there and on teh way down.

FRom Harbour Island to Tarpun Bay is a good 2 hour drive. If you do a trip to Eleuthera, be aware that the water taxis go off duty at sundown, so if you don't make it back on time you are stuck on Eleuthera for the night.

HOpe this helps and let me know if you have any other quesions.
