st. croix or st. thomas with children

we are planning our 10th wedding anniversary for march and are bringing along our 6 yr. old and our 15 yr. old babysitter. has anyone stayed at the pelican cove condo or the tamarind reef hotel in st.croix? or the island beachcomber hotel or the anchorage in st. thomas? wanting a 2 bdrm, where we can just walk out on the beach.
is the crime worse in st.croix? just need some help in making some decisions! thanks!!

Try the Buccaneer in St Croix. Great family (and adult) resort with a range of accomodations. With a great kids program, you don't really need a babysitter. Everyone in St Croix warned us to take precautions concerning the real local crime rate, but we felt safe in the resort and busy restaurant areas.

Island Beachcomber is on Lindberg Bay, near the airport. It has a children's water park next door, but a drive to restaurants and other attractions.

The Anchorage is on Cowpet Bay, next door to the St Thomas Yacht Club and on the east end of St Thomas. It is a condominium complex, so you would have a kitchen etc. There are several restaurants within walking distance (although part of that walk is over some rocks)-Arthur's, Bonnie's and a new one, Robert's. Also, many great places in Red Hook down the road. One thing to check is that the Yacht Club sponsors the Rolex Regatta in the spring, and I believe it is the end of March in '03. It would make the beach and the bay VERY busy. I guess from the length of my response I would head you toward the Anchorage...

Anchorage is privately owned condos with a small beach. The Rolex is Easter weekend so check your dates since many of the yacht club members will be using their condos that week. It is a fun week with lots of activity in Red Hook and nearby. You might have a bit of a walk since some of the Anchorage units are back from the beach or request one near the front. Small but good restaurant there, Arthurs, and you'll want to rent a vehicle to get around. You can also get to Bonnie's and Robert's through the Cowpet Condos so you don't have to climb the rocks.
Beachcomber is adjacent to the airport runway and would not be my choice although it's on an excellent beach.
Buccaneer is lovely but sounding like you are looking for a more moderate priced place.
You might check Secret Harbour Beachfront prices and see how they fit into your budget since it also is condo set up with kitchens, on a great beach with good snorkeling and one of the better island restaurants on site, Blue Moon Cafe.

Hey, xxx! Yes, the Rolex is usually Easter weekend, but not in '03- it is March 28-30! Check the STYC or the Rolex International web site.
