We will be going to St. Thomas from Feb 29th through March 7th, and will be celebrating my boyfriend's birthday while we are there. I would love to surprise him with a romantic dinner at a great restaurant. I'd want a great view, romantic atmosphere, excellent food and a varied selection, as he hates seafood. I'm willing to spend a decent amount of money if it's just the right place.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! We are staying at the Frenchman's Reef/Morningstar, but would get a cab if necessary to go into town

I'm surprised you haven't gotten a lot of suggestions yet.

My first choice for your dinner meets all your requirements except for the view....Old Stone Farmhouse.

Other good choices would be Room with a View, Banana Tree Grille or Mafolie. All of these are above downtown with Mafolie having possibly one of the best views on the island, but in third place among these three for food.

Other choices would include Mims at Compass Point with a nice, outdoor view over the water (lit at night) and Blue Mon Cafe at Secret Harbour, although the latter while having some of the best food on the island doesn't have much view after the sun goes down.

In prior years I would have quickly suggested Agave Terrace at Point Pleasant, but last summer the food & service there were both terrible.

One other romantic place with great food but no external view (the inside is an experience in itself) is Virgilio's in downtown. Great Italian food.

Hi, DarbyNYC. You're going to love St. Thomas! I was just there with my family for my wedding in July 2003. We had lots of good dining experiences, but I think our favorite restaurants were Banana Tree Grille and Agave Terrace.

Banana Tree Grille (at Bluebeard's Castle, if I remember correctly) has a great view of the cruise ship harbor, and at night it becomes more romantic as the lights around the island start to twinkle. There were a number of great fish dishes, but my dad had lamb that was out of this world, and my brother enjoyed a chicken pasta dish.The decor wasn't overly elegant; it had a definite island flair. The service was the best we experienced.

After my wedding, we dined at Agave Terrace, located at Point Pleasant Resort on the northeast part of the island. There was a beautiful view of neighboring St. John. We all had great meals there and good service as well. I recommend the fresh catch of the day with your choice of sauce. My husband doesn't eat seafood either, and he had a wonderful filet there.

We also tried Old Stone Farmhouse. The decor there is very romantic (soft colors, low lighting, etc.), but there's no real view since it's not near the water. Although the food and service were good, I found the dishes there to be a little too gourmet for my taste. I had the duck, which I would recommend.

For something more casual while you're there, you should try Cuzzins, located in Charlotte Amalie in the shopping district. That's where you'll find a number of local dishes--tasty and not too expensive.

I would also recommend Old Stone Farmhouse...romantic, great service and food. Unfortunately, there is not a view to speak of, but the atmosphere will make up for it.

Agave Terrace is the place to go. Start out with a drink on the beach - walking through the hotel there to the bar that is on a dock hanging over the water. Then walk up the steep hill, following the path through the thick vegetation, past secluded pools, to the restaurant. It hangs out over the hill, overlooking the bay. Friendly staff and great food.

I would definitely vote for Mafolie's or Room with a View, DarbyNYC. It's been a while since I've been to St. Thomas, but I still think about those two restaurants for the fantastic ambiance. Be sure to time your reservation at Mafolie's to conincide with the sunset. Most beautiful thing I've ever seen. However, I'm a seafood lover, so I can attest to the nonseafood dishes.

Though I 've never been to the mafolie, my son lived and worked in stt for 5 yrs and just recently returned to the north. He ALWAYS wined and dined his girlfriends at the Mafolie, though we like Agave, and the stone Farmhouse and haven't tried Mafolie.
A ferry to St Johns for some of their nice romantic restaurants would be fun too....

Years ago, there was a wonderfully romantic resaurant overlooking the harbor called "The 1829". We loved it.

If you are staying at MorningStar, a wonderful dinner can be had there at Tavern on the Beach. Far from being a 'tavern', it is a goumet restaurant with tables adorned with linen and candlelight, accompanied with live and as I recall, romantic music. It is located on the beach, Request a seaside table (tell them it is for your special occasion), and you will hear the waves lapping at the beach as you dine.

I have also enjoyed the Stone Farmhouse. The food is outstanding and artisticly presented. My salad came as a lettuce flower that unfolded into the shape of a bowl upon my cutting it.

Herve's has wonderful food and a very scenic view. It sits high upon a hill, where one can enjoy the lights of St. Thomas and cruiseships sparkling in the water's reflections.

Hotel 1849 is also great. It is close to Herv's and offers a similar beautiful view for tables on the veranda, but it was not open during my last visit.

Dining in St. Thomas is a most enjoyable expierience.

You guys are missing one of the best, if not the best Restaurants on St Thomas. That is Herves. It's in Charlotte Amalie and yes you have to climb up a hill but what a view and the food is the best on the Island. My son and wife are in a cab on the way there right now as I write this. Me I have to work but we go every year and we go to Herves! Ask for Paulette

We went to Herve in November when we were in STT and loved the view and the service, but the food was just average.

The only other place we went was Virgilio's, and while the food was superb, the service was only fair, and the restaurant is very small and allows smoking - which could have ruined our meal as the tables are very close together. (Luckily, the people smoking at the table next to ours left before our entrees arrived.)

The place my research indicated were the absolute best in STT for a romantic dinner was Old Stone Farmhouse. I'm sorry we did not make it there.
