I was just in St. John last week and also two years ago. We took boats (rented) several days from St. John to Virgin Gorda and Jost Van Dyke. I truly loved both of them. The baths at Virgin Gorda - jump out of the boat and swim in (wear your water shoes). Or the Soggy Dollar Bar (my fav) at Jost Van Dyke - great beach with hammocks, wonderful white sand, clear water and Pain Killer drinks at the tiki bar. You'll see why they call it the Soggy Dollar when you get there.

I'm sure you can also book sailings or catamarans from Cruz Bay to these islands as well. Great day trips.

Theresa

Elizabeth,

It is completely worth it! If you don't go it would be a big mistake! Always the highlight of our trip there. Depending on what you are looking for out of an excursion I can help you out. Are you with friends, family, children? Let me know and I will offer some suggestions.

Please take the time to visit the surrounding islands! If you go to Cruz Bay, you'll find Delbert at Ocean Runners. They rent out boats (which we always do), however, they will also captain a boat for you. They know all the best places to go, including the outlying but accessible islands (ask to go to Sandy Cay, The Indians for snorkeling and to Billy Bones for lunch). It will be the highlight of you trip!!!!

Definitely - you won't regret it. Agree with the poster Theresa who suggested the Baths at VG and a visit to Jost Van Dyke as well.

For lunch, I suggest an anchored boat (around JVD, I believe) called the Willy T for "Grog and Grub." It is a reproduction of an old timer boat that makes typical luncheon fare right on board. When the diners are finished, they throw any leftovers overboard, and you should see the sea life that come for 'their' lunch!

Have a great time!

Sandy - we'll have two teenagers with us; the entire family has done both scuba and snorkeling - this sounds like more of a snorkeling trip. We're staying at the westin but will have a jeep for the week. I was in St John about 25 years ago so I'm sure its changed a lot since then.

I would definitely recommend a snorkel trip to the BVI's. We took the New Horizons II trip. It was a powerboat. We stopped at the Baths in Virgin Gorda,Guana key and Marina Key. We also stopped at Jost Van Dyke to swim, hang out on the beach and have a drink at the Soggy dollar bar. We ate lunch at Marina Key. I would recommend it.
