Cape Air O.K.?

We need a one way flight for four of us in February from SJU to STX. Cape Air is about 1/2 the price of AA. Seems like a no brainer but I'm just curious if others have had good experiences with Cape Air.

Our family flew them once between San Juan and Vieques, return. no problems, on time departures and arrivals. I will say this: their desk & gates are not well marked in the SJU airport, so we had a bit of trouble actually finding them.

Our route used very small, low-flying airplanes, which I loved, but others might not.

I know several people here who use them regularly & never heard any complaints.

We use Cape Air often, and have had only positive interactions with them. As EJ said, they are tucked away in a far terminal of the airport and if you have a very short time between flights, you really need to book it, asking people along the way to send you in the right direction! Also you need to go through security again (in SJU).
No, American is not flying into Vieques. It was anticipated for last Dec., but have not heard anything since. The AA desk/counter is in place in the Vieques airport though! Just waiting.....

I meant to add, that Cape Air does not charge you if you need to cancel or change a flight.
I have about 50/50 luck lately flying out of Logan on time. I keep Cape Air in my cell dial up so I can change the flight to the next day or whatever, when the flight is delayed.

Hi Carol--we have flown them several times from the Vineyard and I don't like little planes and it was fine--very nice, very efficient (remember that fun show, Wings, I'm pretty sure it was based on Cape Air); in fact, one infamous time we flew from Nantucket to Hyannis in the aftermath of a hurricane when the ferries weren't running--don't recommend it, but we all made it!

Enjoy,

Mary

mahobaygirl, when we connected from American to Cape Air this past May, we stayed in the airport to go from one terminal to the other and didn't go through security again, as we never left the secure area. Is there another way to do it?

ej: It is kind of weird, when you get to the terminal with the hopper airlines, you go to the check in desk, then they send you back to the right to go through security. They have those new air puff ones. From there, you get sent downstairs to get to your gate. I have done it that way at least 2 times. Also, I only carry-on my bags. I have heard that American to Cape Air transfers bags for you. If you did that, maybe you did not have to go through security! Or maybe I just looked questionable,

mahobaygirl, who knows? We were only traveling with carry-on bags from our American flight, so no luggage to check. When we arrived at the Cape Air desk, they just checked us in there. We didn't even have the American and Cape Air flights on a single ticket, so who can say? Maybe my experience is the aberration!

Hi, I thought I would update this rather old information by posting a question. We are going to Vieques in January '08, and I'm debating between Air Link and Cape Air for our commuter flight over there from San Juan. My cousin, who has been many times, swears by Air Link, but they are kinda pricey. Just wondering what the more recent experiences have been for travelers with Cape Air. Thanks!

Yep, Cape Air is just fine. I've used them to fly to the Vineyard as well. Many friends of mine who have summer houses on Nantucket use them every weekend.

And, as a bonus, last time I flew with them the pilot was really cute!

Since I was the OP, I'll chime in now. We did take Cape Air in February and it was great (especially after a nightmare of stress the day before thanks to the famous Valentines Day ice storm on the East Coast--think JetBlue).

The pilot was friendly as were the airport staff. They tell you where you will sit on the plane based on your size. So my 13 year old son got to be the co-pilot!!! I'm not big on flying but it was perfectly fine. It did make you wonder what we all would have done in an emergency, though.

I would take them again.

JanT, we just flew with Cape Air a few weeks ago from St.Thomas to San Juan, and they were great. The check-in process went very smoothly, the staff was very friendly and courteous, and they were even running 10min ahead of schedule! They also were able to transfer our checked luggage directly to our connecting flight with US Air, which was a huge plus.
